The play is set in Brighton Beach in 1937 and is wholly concerned with one family’s plight during a one-week space of time. The play has humor and pathos in equal measure, and is a heartwarming testament to the love of family.
Roles:
Eugene: a 14–16-year-old precocious sports lover who provides much of the humor in the play
Stanley: 17-18 years-old and Eugene’s older brother who struggles with his role as the “second man” of the house
Nora: a gorgeous 15-16-year-old cousin with dreams of becoming a dancer
Laurie: Nora’s younger sister (13-14 years old) who is pampered by her mother because of a “flutter” in her heart
Kate: 40ish; Eugene and Stanley’s mother, who keeps the family on an even keel
Blanche: Nora and Laurie’s mother; who have all came to live under the same roof since the passing of her husband
Jack: 45ish: The patriarch of the family who works very hard to support his family
