half a dozen people have come to my hillside to dig japanese maple volunteer seedlings. you can barely see that any are gone.

they are sprouting up alongside and between the stone steps going down into my garden. they are tiny, two- and four-leaf. by the time you get here, some might be 6-leaf.

there are 1000’s !!!!

these are from green japanese maple trees, and they are not laceleaf. i don’t know the variety. i bought one when i first moved to this location 27 years ago. since then i planted seedlings from the japanese maple trees at U.S. Bank in manzanita. so these are likely a cross.

they have grown to their mature size of 15-20 feet tall on my north-facing hillside. in full sun they likely wouldn’t grow that tall.

they turn amber/russet colors in the fall, more vibrant with colder autumns, less colorful with milder autumns.
