Fascist rhetoric

The word fascist is triggering because of its association to Hitler and all he did. However Benito Mussolini is known as the founder of fascism, and whatever one thinks about Trump doesn’t mean he isn’t following that play book.

I heard an excellent interview with Jennifer Mercieca, an American scholar of rhetoric and professor of communication at Texas A&M University, last night on Australia’s ABC News Daily. It is only 15 minutes long:

She explains in detail the method behind Trump’s “madness.” Suddenly everything Trump says in his rambling rally speeches makes perfect sense, and I understand why so many good, and probably rational, people love and support him.

Trying to figure this out has been a long journey for me and probably many others. Meanwhile apparently this is not a new revelation, since Mercieca wrote a book, released in 2020, explaining his rhetoric:

Considering all the grief this issue has caused over the last four years, why mainstream media has failed to mention this important analysis will be a subject covered in future history books. The Harris campaign must long ago have understood what’s going on and I trust there is a good reason they haven’t brought it up themselves. It’s only because Trump’s former cabinet members are just now sounding the alarm, and Harris was directly asked by a reporter, that it’s getting any attention at all.

I hope this helps anyone who has likewise struggled. It sure helped me, and I’ll no longer have to self-medicate with alcohol out of frustration from not knowing what’s happening. I know now.
