I have walked down many steps
into rooms where their harnesses
hung, motionless and deeply stained.
What I have seen I cannot unsee.
I will not forget these memorials
to slow torture, nor listen to all the
repeating lies honoring our young
soldiers marketing their righteous
death. Each of us has seen the
continuing diaspora and still hear
voices that were lost, taken
for their dignity and uncommon
sense. Remembering, let us now
welcome all the ancient fears,
awakening to the enduring call
to heal and abandon hate.
As this is done, days will come
when we shall no longer run
from the roots of war, turning away
from what will always be true:
We can open our eyes and see.
