‘CRIMES OF THE HEART’ FINAL WEEKEND AT THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Submitted By: admin@riverbendplayers.org – Click to email about this post

FINAL WEEKEND! THREE SHOWS REMAINING, MARCH 15th, 16th, and 17th!

‘CRIMES OF THE HEART’ Live on Stage at the NCRD Performing Arts Center in Nehalem.

Great seats available at www.RiverbendPlayers.org

CRIMES OF THE HEART (Pulitzer Prize Winner):

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.

Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

Their troubles, grave and yet somehow hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.
In the end, the play is the story of how its characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has closed.

Fictional Soap Opera – Tides of Manzanita – Episode 3

The Tides of Manzanita – The Server Has Ears

In the picturesque coastal town of Manzanita, where the drama of the council rivaled the tumultuous sea, Episode 3 of “The Tides of Manzanita” unfolds through the eyes of Ruby, a server at The Cove. This was no ordinary night; the air was charged with a sense of impending intrigue, and The Cove, usually a haven for tourists and locals alike, had transformed into the stage for a clandestine council meeting.

Ruby had seen her share of secrets whispered over candlelit tables, but nothing prepared her for the spectacle that night. The council had gathered in the secluded back room, a space usually reserved for the most discreet of gatherings. As she moved silently among the shadows, her tray of drinks a mere camouflage, Ruby became the unwitting confidante of Manzanita’s elite.

Councilor Jed, a man whose legacy was as deeply rooted in Manzanita, led the assembly with an air of gravitas that commanded attention. Beside him, Councilor Bart, his ever-present shadow, nodded in agreement with everything said. The newcomers—Sophia, Marcus, and Elena—sat wide-eyed, their innocence stark against the seasoned politicking of their more tenured councilors.

The heart of their gathering was a scandal—a report that threatened to shake the foundations of Manzanita itself. Ruby overheard whispers of an investigation, a sum of $150,000 vanishing from the general fund, and a mayor wrongfully accused. The plot the council concocted was more outlandish than any soap opera that graced the television in The Cove’s cozy lounge: blame the disappearance of the report on a fantastical heist by sea-faring pirates, lured by the lore of Manzanita’s hidden treasures.

Sophia’s voice, clear and principled, cut through the din of plotting. “But the truth…” she began, only to be silenced by a wave of Jed’s hand. Ruby’s heart ached for Sophia, the lone voice of reason in a sea of deceit.

As the night wore on, Ruby’s rounds became fewer, but her presence remained unnoticed, a ghost among the conspirators. The council’s plan unfolded with each refill of their glasses: create a tale so captivating that the town would forget the report ever existed, turning their attention to the romanticism of pirates and buried treasure.

Yet, as the moon climbed higher in the sky, casting a silvery glow through the windows of The Cove, Ruby knew that this story was far from over. With each whispered word and clandestine glance, she pieced together the true narrative of Manzanita, a tale not of pirates and treasure, but of power, greed, and the betrayal of truth. The group would do anything to sideline the former Mayor, who dared to question their decisions.

As the council departed, leaving behind nothing but the echo of their schemes, Ruby was left with a decision. In her hands, she held the power to unravel the council’s carefully woven tapestry of lies. The quiet observer, the keeper of The Cove’s secrets, now became its most pivotal figure. Oh well, she thought, with $150 grand to throw around, they ought to have left a better tip!

“The Tides of Manzanita, Episode 3: The Server Has Ears,” as seen through Ruby’s eyes, transformed from a simple tale of political intrigue into a story of courage and moral fortitude. In the coming days, the tides would turn, and Ruby would find herself at the heart of a storm that could change Manzanita forever.

Nehalem Valley Care Center Receives OFC Grant Support

For immediate release March 11, 2024

Care Center Awarded Oregon Community Foundation Grant – For the Second Time

Financial Support Helps Train and Employ Nursing Assistants

(Wheeler) – The Oregon Community Foundation’s (OCF) “Better Nursing Home Care Grant Fund” has awarded the north coast region’s only skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility a second grant to support the Nehalem Valley Care Center’s efforts to train and employ Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs).

The Nehalem Valley Care Center in Wheeler regularly sponsors educational programs that prepare graduates to work as Certified Nurse Assistants who perform essential health care duties for patients. The OFC grant in the amount of $19,600 is on top of a similar $15,000 grant awarded in 2023. The grant helps defray the cost of paying CNA trainees while they participate in classes and gain practical experience at the Care Center.

“We are deeply appreciative of this continued funding which has been essential to meeting the care needs of our patients and providing employment opportunities in the community,” said Erica Knepper, RN, of Canyon Wren Consulting who provides nurse training and consulting services to the Care Center.

Nehalem Valley Care Center employs approximately 45 staff members, half in the nursing department. Certified Nursing Assistants are among the most difficult position to recruit and therefore an in-house training program allows the Care Center to help local talent pursue a career in healthcare.

The Care Center, owned by the Nehalem Bay Health District, is our region’s only skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, in fact the only facility of its kind between Astoria and Newport on the Oregon coast. The facility is managed by Canyon Wren Consulting, an Oregon nursing home management company.

The Care Center provides 24-hour Skilled/Long Term Care nursing care for residents and offers Physical/Occupational/Speech therapy services as well and is licensed by the state of Oregon. The Care Center is one of Tillamook County’s largest employers with staff that includes Registered Nurses (RN’s), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s), food service, maintenance, administrative and business office personnel.

For information on the Care Center’s CNA training program contact Lynnelee Baertlein at

CRIMES OF THE HEART:
This darkly comedic play by Beth Henley delves into the messy lives of the Magrath women, each grappling with their own “crimes of the heart.”
Under a searing Mississippi sun, the Magrath sisters’ fragile lives shatter when Babe, the youngest, shoots her philandering husband.
Summoned home, the eldest, Lenny, wrestles with small-town stagnation and dreams of escape.
Meg, the middle sister, a washed-up singer, drowns her past in whiskey, returning with secrets clinging to her like Spanish moss.
As Babe’s legal storm brews, the kitchen of their childhood home becomes a pressure cooker of buried memories and blistering truths.
Past resentments erupt, revealing the scars of their mother’s suicide and their father’s desertion.
Their eccentric cousin Chick stirs the pot, while their flamboyant lawyer Barnette offers shaky legal support and a dash of unexpected romance.
This Pulitzer Prize-winning play paints a bittersweet portrait of Southern women struggling to rise above their “crimes of the heart” and embrace the promise of a brighter future.

Fictional Manzanita Soap Opera Episode 2

Fictional Manzanita soap opera – Episode 2
“The Tides of Manzanita – The Vanishing Act”

In the quaint coastal town of Manzanita, where the ebb and flow of the tides mirror the swirling undercurrents of drama and intrigue, the city council found themselves embroiled in a scandal that threatened to eclipse the serene beauty of their seaside haven.

As night enveloped Manzanita, a clandestine meeting was convened at The Cove, an establishment known for its discretion and the preferred venue for the town’s elite to discuss matters of importance. The air was thick with tension, and the stakes had never been higher.

Councilor Jed, a stalwart figure whose family roots were as deep and intertwined with Manzanita as the ancient pines, took the helm of the gathering. “My fellow councilors,” he began, his voice steady and commanding, “we stand at the precipice of a crisis that threatens the very fabric of our community.”

Flanking him was Councilor Bart, ever the loyal lieutenant, ready to follow Jed’s lead without question. A trio of newcomers—Sophia, Marcus, and Elena—looked on, their faces a tapestry of uncertainty and intrigue, each harboring their own secrets yet united in their naiveté of the political machinations at play.

At the heart of the storm was a report—a document so damning it could unravel the delicate balance of power in Manzanita. The city manager, a formidable personality, known for an iron will and temperamental nature, was incensed by a perceived slight from the new mayor, leading to an investigation that siphoned $150,000 or more from the town’s coffers. The investigation’s findings were clear: the mayor was innocent. The report and expenditure should have been unnecessary.

Yet, in the world of “The Tides of Manzanita,” truth was a currency of little value. “We must ensure this report never sees the light of day,” Jed decreed, his gaze sweeping across the table. “The general fund is our war chest, and we cannot allow the prying eyes of our citizens to dictate our actions.”

The councilors conspired to concoct a tale so fantastical, it could only be born from the depths of Manzanita’s tempestuous heart. With straight faces, councilors would claim the report was stolen in a daring heist by pirates, drawn to Manzanita by legends of buried treasure and ancient secrets.

Sophia, the voice of reason amidst the madness, dared to question the plan. “But what of the truth? Shouldn’t the mayor’s name be cleared? The people deserve to know what nearly a year’s worth of property taxes was wasted to produce,” she implored, her plea echoing in the dim room.

Jed’s response was swift, a sinister smile playing on his lips. “Dear Sophia, in Manzanita, the truth is what we make it, a mere pawn in our game of chess. Our story will be one of mystery and adventure, captivating the town’s imagination and diverting attention from our true motives. This report is an embarrassment and will never be disclosed.”

As the council plotted, unbeknownst to them, a shadow lurked in the darkness. The enigmatic figure of Victoria, a journalist with a penchant for uncovering the hidden truths of Manzanita, had overheard their entire scheme. Armed with her knowledge, she was poised to unravel the council’s web of lies, setting the stage for a showdown that would forever alter the course of Manzanita’s history.

Tune in to your favorite soap opera, this week’s “The Tides of Manzanita, The Vanishing Act.” It promises a tale of deception, power, and the pursuit of truth amidst the backdrop of a town where the tides dictate life, and secrets are as vast as the ocean itself.
