Empowering Access Visits County Parks

June 16, 2023

Tillamook Coast Visitors Association (TCVA) hosted Ashley Schahfer, founder of Empowering Access, for an accessibility tour of three Tillamook County parks June 14-15. Empowering Access is an Oregon based consulting company whose mission is to provide equitable experience and knowledge-based guidance to those looking to engage in disability, equity, and inclusion work. Schahfer’s visit was made possible by a $20,000 grant awarded to TCVA through Travel Oregon’s small project grant program.

The tour was attended by Parks Director JoAnn Woelfle, Parks Office Manager Melissa Rondeau, Parks Maintenance Tech Gene Henderson, TCVA Trails & Outdoor Recreation Manager Dan Haag, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) Deputy Director Claudine Rehn, TEP Environmental Education Specialist Rachel Freeman, and TEP Communication & Engagement Manager Diana Dimarco.

The two-day tour took in three of the most-visited parks in the county system – Trask River, Kilchis River and Barview Jetty Campgrounds. Schahfer, an outdoors enthusiast with two degrees in architecture and 21 years of lived experience in disability, offered tips and advice on ways to improve access in the parks for users of all abilities. She pointed out a variety of things that could pose challenges to people dealing with mobility issues, such as concrete lips in front of restrooms, large gravel in handicapped parking areas and public spaces, bark chips on trails and playgrounds, and the height placement of door handles, soap dispensers and hand towels in restrooms. County parks staff also consulted with Schahfer on design ideas for creating dedicated ADA campsites in each park and improving beach and river access points. Schahfer will create a report from all of the data collected during the tour for the parks department and TCVA to use in planning future accessibility projects.

In addition to the parks consultation, Schahfer will be collaborating with TCVA to create an accessibility training and discussion forum for city and county leaders and personnel to be held locally in late fall of 2023.

“Ashley was incredible to work with and we were thrilled to bring her to Tillamook County,” Haag said. “The information she provided will be invaluable as we look ahead to creating recreational opportunities that are welcoming to all abilities.”

A Rhyme for Democracy in Manzanita

A Rhyme for Democracy in Manzanita
In Manzanita’s realm, a council’s plight
A loan for city hall, causing a fright.
Fearful of citizens, council hides and evades,
Avoiding a vote, like a masquerade.

Millions of dollars, a hefty demand,
But the people’s voice they cannot withstand.
Previous votes turned down their request,
Now they scramble, seeking excuses, lest…

They claim a dangerous precedent would be set,
As if letting people choose could cause a threat.
Democracy, it seems, must be contained,
Lest citizens decide, unconstrained.

“Oh, the inconvenience!” one member cries,
Voting’s a hassle, in their comedic guise.
Why bother with democracy, the people’s choice?
When the council can speak with an 80% voice.

Blaming the past, they point and accuse,
As if absolving themselves, they seek to confuse.
The previous council, the scapegoats they’ve found,
Yet the responsibility lies on the current ground.

The old city hall stands forlorn,
Sold and repurposed, a relic of the storm.
Consultants justify expenses, spending in vain,
While the people’s needs and voices remain.

But Manzanita, let us not be dismayed,
For poetry can shed light on this charade.
Let democracy flourish, its essence revive,
As citizens’ voices echo and thrive.

Oh council, be bold, embrace the people’s might,
Allow them to vote, in the clear, shining light.
For their voices hold power, their hearts are true,
Manzanita’s destiny rests in their view.

So let the loan face the people’s decree,
In the hands of democracy, let it be free.
For in their hands lies the future’s call,
Manzanita’s heart, beating strong for all.

Will Stone

12 ANGRY JURORS SETS NEW PERFORMANCE AND BOX OFFICE RECORDS!

A letter from the president of our board of directors:

Dear Theater Goers,

On behalf of Riverbend Players Community Theater, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your support of our production of 12 ANGRY JURORS.

Your attendance and ticket sales helped us set new attendance and box office records, and we are so grateful for your patronage.

We know that there are many other things you could have been doing with your time, so we are honored that you chose to spend it with us.

We hope you enjoyed the show as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

The cast and crew worked tirelessly for months to bring this classic play to life.

They are all immensely talented actors and crew members, and we are so proud of their work.

We would also like to thank our sponsors and donors for their generous support.

Without their help, we would not have been able to produce this show.

We hope you will join us again soon for another Riverbend Players production.

We have some exciting shows in the works for this year, and we can’t wait to share our 2024 season lineup with you soon.

Thank you again for your support. We appreciate it more than you know.

Sincerely,

Frank Squillo, Board President
Riverbend Players Community Theater

NCRD New Pool Update

Submitted By: ncrd@ncrdnehalem.org – Click to email about this post
The work on the new parking lot for NCRD’s new Aquatic Center started this week. We apologize for the inconvenience this is going to cause our patrons and our neighbors. We are required by code to have additional parking as part of the construction. We will try and have the parking lot completed as soon as possible. We estimate it will take 6 – 8 weeks.

In the meantime, we ask for your patience and understanding. The parking lot design includes landscaping and replanting. When it is finished it will not only give us more parking, it will be aesthetically pleasing.

The new pool has been a long-standing goal for NCRD. Once it is completed, it will be an incredible achievement and asset. Unfortunately, the construction is going to effect parking and daily activity until it is completed. Thanks for your understanding!

12 ANGRY JURORS, based on the award-winning Henry Fonda movie 12 Angry Men:

On a hot summer day after a lengthy trial, a jury must decide whether a 19-year-old man is guilty of murdering his father.

The jury votes 11-1 that the man is guilty of the crime, but the law requires a unanimous vote by all 12 jurors to pass judgment.

Tempers flare as the eleven jurors try to convince the 1 dissenter to come to their side.

However, as the evidence is re-examined, new uncertainties come to light, forcing everyone to honestly question whether there is some measure of “reasonable doubt”.

Summer Lunch program for kids needs help

Submitted By: knappgj@yahoo.com – Click to email about this post
Children are out of school and the school lunch program has stopped until September. Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church in Nehalem has supplied lunches for food insecure local children for several years.
Due to State and Federal restrictions on how the food is supplied, the church is no longer receiving assistance from them. They require all food be given and eaten at a central location, without supplying transportation or supervision. This does not work for our large rural area. Money is needed to buy the lunch materials and volunteers are needed to make, pack and deliver them two days per week – Monday and Wednesday.
Volunteers can call the church at 503-368-5612 and leave a message for Bobbie.
Donations should be made out to NBUMC with “lunch” on the memo line. They can be sent to NBUMC, POB 156, Nehalem, OR 79131 or dropped off at the church at 36150 Tenth St. , Nehalem.
Kids shouldn’t have to worry about where lunch is coming from.

Summer Solstice Retreat Day this Saturday!

Submitted By: revolutionginger@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Ready or not- summer is here!

The longest day of the year is approaching fast and we are having a retreat day to celebrate.

This Saturday, June 17th from 9am-2pm

The flower gardens are exploding. The river is clear and low. It’s finally warm enough to do a retreat day outside.

If you haven’t had a chance to try out this combination art, wellness & magic- now’s your chance.

Iris Sullivan Daire of Dreambird Studios in Astoria will be leading a solar fabric printing class in the garden. Warning- If you’ve never done sun activated cyanotype art- it’s super addictive.

Adria Badagnani of Art & Channel in Manzanita is leading a Summer Solstice circle and bringing her poetry, gem essence oils and magic to play with.

I’m firing up our wood fired sauna/cold plunge and making tea & snacks.

**Plus you will very likely get a bonus serenade by my new hand pan drum that I’m currently obsessed with:)

I have just a few spots left in this event.

I hope you can give yourself this treat and come play with us for the Solstice!

RIVERBEND PLAYERS COMMUNITY THEATER ANNOUNCES NEWLY ELECTED BOARD OFFICERS

Submitted By: frank@wandascafe.com – Click to email about this post
Riverbend Players congratulate our newly elected board officers on their new positions!

Frank Squillo as President, Julee Ward as VP / Treasurer, Linda Makohon re-elected as board Secretary, and newest board member Juli Stratton elected as the new Artistic Director.

The board would like to thank our outgoing president, Tom Cocklin, for his years of service and dedication to Riverbend Players.

Tom was vital in the inception of Riverbend Players becoming a 503c non-profit nearly 10 years ago and has worked tirelessly in numerous roles over the years to help sustain an organization dedicated to producing theater productions for our coastal community.

With Tom’s retirement from the board, he leaves Riverbend Players in the capable hands of the current members and new board president, Frank Squillo.

Frank said “I am honored to step into this new role as the president of our community theater group. I am committed to building on the theater’s past successes and ensuring that it continues to provide quality entertainment for the community. I also want to continue to make the theater a fun and inclusive place for everyone who wants to be involved. With the help of the current board members, I have no doubt we are ready for the next chapter in Riverbend Players’ future!”

Riverbend Players’ current production of 12 ANGRY JURORS has 3 final shows this weekend. Come see why it’s broken all previous attendance and revenue records for RiverBend Players productions.

Our Library Thanks the Community

Submitted By: ntlf1987@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
On behalf of North Tillamook Library Friends — who provide the building and grounds that house our library in Manzanita — I extend heartfelt thanks to everyone in the community who made our annual Memorial Day Book Sale one of our most successful ever! This year’s sale produced just over $7,000 in total revenue, which will enable Library Friends to keep our Library in tiptop shape. Our book sale truly is an annual community effort – from the hundreds of book buyers, of all ages, who came out on Saturday to snap up bargains and make additional donations to Library Friends – to the organizations that
housed the sale — Calvary Bible Church, Hoffman Center for the Arts, and Pine Grove Community House – to the nearly 150 volunteers who worked on sale day and throughout the year preparing for the sale. Overseeing all those volunteers was the volunteer-in-chief, Book Sale Chair, Madeline Olson. The book sale exemplifies the exceptional community spirit in North Tillamook County, and underscores the motto of North Tillamook Library Friends: Building a Community of Learners Since 1987.

With deepest gratitude,
Betsy Chase
President, North Tillamook Library Friends
