Drake Association Observes Nehalem Bay Anchorage

Submitted By: ggitzen@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
On Thursday June 27th, at the Wheeler Waterfront Park, the Sir Francis Drake Association of Oregon and California board members observed the 450th anniversary of Francis Drake’s anchorage in Nehalem Bay during his 1577-1580 circumnavigation. Garry Gitzen, President of the Oregon chapter, read from the voyage journal describing Drake’s encounter with the Natives and flora & fauna as: We fell with a convenient and fit harbor ¾ mile across and came to anchor therein, until we continued until the 23rd day of July [old Julian calendar] (August 2nd new Gregorian calendar). During all that time, so near the sun during the Summer we were continually cold…and although the cold was second nature the Natives came shivering and often shroud themselves under [fur] garments to keep them warm….” The journal went on to describe the Snowy Plover as: “The poor bird’s souls not daring to so much as once to arise from their nests, of which we had plenty of observances, until the eggs have hatched.” The journal went on to: “showing trees without leaves [PNW fir, spruce, cedar, noble, redwood, hemlock and yew].
Afterwards, members gathered in Wheeler at 125 First St to erect a 12 ft. by 8 ft. banner. Additionally, various flags were raised of: a symbol of St. George, patron saint of all English Navigators and would have been displayed on Drake’s sails; a flag describing the four corners of the globe sailed during the circumnavigation; a British flag; and a flag recognizing Drake’s anchorage in Oregon.
Everyone in the tri-cities is welcome to drive by and read the banner of Drake’s land claim he called Nova Albion, an old name for England so-called by the Romans. Please do not trespass on the property.

Cheryl will demonstrate and let you practice each one, wet on wet, wet on dry and many others.
I will offer gentle, encouraging tips and tricks as we go along. Just show up with curiosity and openness to having some fun putting paint onto paper and seeing why watercolor is so magical.

All supplies will be provided to use but if you want to bring your own brushes and paints, feel free. You will have several small paintings to take home with you.

Our family has had a home in Manzanita since 1970, I have enjoyed watercolor painting at the beach, it’s really one of my most creative and inspirational places to be.

Just a quick note to let you know that the first outdoor concert of the year is happening this Saturday 6/29 with the “Portland String Queen” herself- Lauren Sheenan!

Get your tix at link below:

Lauren is known for her old time blues and country sound- perfect for a evening farm serenade.

Feel free to grab a lawn chair, bottle of wine and some snacks and relax by the river.

Lauren tours, teaches at Pacific University, and has recorded 5 CDs played on radio world-wide, including BBC, NPR, and BBKing’s Bluesville.

Recent appearances on NPR, four CDs that charted in the top 20 on folk radio, a 2012 Portland Music Award for outstanding achievement in Folk, inclusion in the Library of Congress as part of the MusicBox project.

We’ll be dancing on the beach this Thursday for this beautiful Solstice Community Gathering!

We won’t be in our usual spot, but more towards the south end of the Y. And not our usual time, but 7pm start instead.

Dance will be led by Libby at Golden Key Wellness: “I’m planning for a solstice welcoming the flame / passions ceremony with qigong for the heart and have stitched in some of the root chakra energy of ley lines into the playlist intention”
also Lane will be calling attention to the ley line and will lead a small guided thing to feel along it – both west (towards Hawaii and Japan) and southeast down towards Shasta and South America. She will also lead it after to see if we can feel how our work/play with both the labyrinth and dance effect the line on around the world.

Looking forward to celebrating and honoring connection to all

Meshuggah-Nuns! Brings Side-Splitting Laughter to the Coaster Theatre Stage this Summer

Submitted By: marketing@coastertheatre.com – Click to email about this post
MESHUGGAH-NUNS!
Written by Dan Goggin

DATES: June 28-September 1, 2024
TIME: All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
TICKETS: $35 and $30. Tickets available online, at the theatre box office or by calling 503-436-1242.

The hilarious Meshuggah-Nuns! makes its home on the Coaster Theatre stage this summer. Opening Friday, June 28 and running for 27 shows through Sunday, Sept. 1.

Meshuggah-Nuns! is the fifth installment in the Nunsense series and follows the sisters of the Little Sisters of Hoboken on an all-expense paid trip on the “Faiths of All Nations” cruise. After a week at sea, the ship runs into a storm. Several people become ill, including all of the actors in the ship’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. (All except the actor playing Tevye, that is.) The captain of the ship, knowing of the sisters’ show biz savvy, requests that the sisters and Tevye put on a revue. The result: a hilarious musical celebration of Catholic and Jewish
traditions.

Meshuggah-Nuns! is directed by Patrick Lathrop and features Katherine Lacaze as Sister Mary Regina (Reverend Mother), Rhonda Warnack as Sister Mary Hubert, Rachel Stahly as Sister Robert Anne, Cathey Ryan as Sister Mary Paul (a.k.a. Amnesia), and David Sweeney as Howard Liszt.

The production crew includes Sondra Gomez (costumer), Mick Alderman (set builder/lighting
design), Juan Lira (set painter) and Nancy McCarthy (sound and light operator).

Tickets are $30 or $35; they can be purchased at the theatre box office (503-436-1242) or online at coastertheatre.com. The box office is open 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to curtain on performance days.
