“We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” ~ Albert Einstein

Shamanic Breathwork is a modality that uses the breath, something we often take for granted, and music to access expansive realms of experiencing and knowing ourselves.

In these journeys, it is possible to bring forth new insights, release stuck emotions, access hidden parts of our psyches and connect with unconditional love, peace and unity.

Modern-era clinical trials show psilocybin-assisted therapy brings “immediate, substantial and sustained” relief from anxiety and depression in patients with advanced cancer. Palliative care providers are eager to add a new palliative care tool to their toolbox to address non-physical suffering. This presentation will briefly review the trials and findings, the prohibited status of psilocybin under current law, and efforts to evolve the law to allow access for therapeutic purposes. The discussion will include Oregon’s pioneering Psilocybin Services Act, the first state law to legalize and regulate this substance despite its federal status.

Nehalem Bay Health Center Has A Cure for the Blues

Submitted By: qulwater@msn.com – Click to email about this post
Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy is pleased to be hosting Rick Estrin and the Nightcats on June 23rd at NCRD for a high energy show that is sure to cure the blues.

ALL proceeds from the Rick Estrin show will benefit the “finishing touches” needed for the new Health Center.

Blues vocalist, harmonica master and songwriting legend Rick Estrin, leader of the musically fearless, wildly entertaining, award-winning band Rick Estrin & The Nightcats, doesn’t like to talk much about his own musical superpowers. But ask him about the Nightcats—multi-instrumentalist/musical mastermind/producer Christoffer “Kid” Andersen, keyboardist/organ wizard/bass player Lorenzo Farrell and endlessly creative drummer Derrick “D’Mar” Martin—and he’ll be happy to sing their praises. “This band is killer. I’m enjoying this all more than ever,” says the man who’s been performing and recording professionally since the early 1970s. “It’s a blessing—there’s so much energy, so much collaboration. The band is just so good right now. And the live show is better than ever.” Living Blues calls Rick Estrin & The Nightcats “a terrific blues band with a real character for a front man,” continuing, “Clever, well-crafted songs framed by first-flight musicianship…hugely entertaining, intelligently conceived and executed roots rock with a wickedly cool and otherworldly twist on tradition. Estrin’s harp work is masterful.”

As an added treat members of the NKN choir will perform a short opening set prior to the Nightcats show.

Don’t miss the show on June 23rd at the NCRD Performing Arts Center. A pre-concert wine and beer reception will begin at 2:00 pm. The music starts at 3:00 pm

Manzanita Conversations with Councilors, Correction

Submitted By: mkuestner10@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Thanks to Bay City Mayor, David McCall for correcting the amount I quoted that Bay City assesses for permanent property taxes per $1,000. The chart I used had the incorrect data, sorry to have passed that along!
There’s a great article in the newsletter Manzanita Today (2/14/2022) that has two charts, one showing local cities with their property tax rates per $1,000. and the following one how much STR taxes (TLT) they rely on in their General Funds. It’s a good illustration of which cities rely heavily on these funds to stay afloat: drive.google.com/file/d/1_LQYpKo1g7pgD4R-SrlYX3QrzpZ8WfJT/view To see the charts, please scroll down to page 8.

NW Authors Series Presents E. Lily Yu

Submitted By: info@cannonbeachlibrary.org – Click to email about this post
Library to Host Award-Winning Sci Fi Author

The NW Author Speakers Series will host Washington science fiction and fantasy writer E. Lily Yu for a talk at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. At the author’s request this will be an in-person only event at the library; the presentation will not be recorded or livestreamed. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Yu received the Washington State Book Award for Fiction in 2022, the Artist Trust LaSalle Storyteller Award in 2017 and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer in 2012. Her stories have been finalists for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Sturgeon and World Fantasy Awards.

Yu’s debut novel “On Fragile Waves” was listed in the New York Times Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of 2021 and the Publishers Weekly Best Books of 2021. It is the story of Firuzeh, a young girl whose family flees war-torn Afghanistan for greater opportunities in Australia. Firuzeh finds hope and comfort in the fairy tales her parents spin about life in Australia, but eventually has to find a way to deal with the reality of life as an immigrant.

Critics have described “On Fragile Waves” as a “knockout,” an “exquisite and unusual magic realistic debut” and a book that “will enchant readers of both literary fiction and fantasy.”

Yu’s debut short story collection, “Jewel Box: Stories,” also met with critical acclaim, with critics describing the 22 stories in the collection as “mini-masterpieces.”

The stories, a mix of science fiction and fantastical tales, include a Muslim businessman who doesn’t appreciate the glories offered to him by an angel; a roadside lamp that declares its love for a handsome human; a cyberpunk retelling of a Greek myth; a woman obsessed with staircases; and other stories told in what one critic has called “an utterly unique voice—poetical yet clear-eyed, hard-nosed yet romantic.”

Yu’s forthcoming book, “Break, Blow, Burn & Make: A Writer’s Thought on Creation” is a guide to creation and creativity.

Hello Conscious Aging and Community Connection Friends,

The goal of the Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is to bring people in our community together to get to know one another at a deeper level and to encourage one another to live our best possible lives.

The Conscious Aging and Community Connections Program is held on the second Monday of each month from 2-4pm. This program is sponsored by Pine Grove Community House which allows us to keep admission at $ 5 per session. All money received goes directly to Pine Grove.

Everyone is welcome to join us.

Next EVENT:

Monday, May 13, 2-4 pm join us for a presentation by Kathie Hightower, on Awe/Delight/Joy/Savoring: Why it’s SO important, especially now, and ways to add these experiences into your daily life. Believe it or not, researchers have done extensive research studies on Awe and Joy and Savoring. Join us to learn why these topics matter to you, especially as we age, and learn simple exercises to add more of these into your own daily life. Let’s choose the antidote to the current negative news spiral. Choose Joy. Here’s how.

Kathie dove into this subject many years ago and in fact published a small book on Simple Joys. She returned to study more current research to prepare this presentation for you. Kathie spent many years traveling the world, doing keynotes and workshops on topics like Jump Into Life, and Joyful Living. This is a mini-presentation.

DON’T FORGET: Bring a pen and a book or magazine to write on…we’ll have handouts ready for you to fill in.

Doors open at 145. Program starts right at 2pm.

If you have questions, contact Kathie Hightower at kathiejhightower@gmail.com.
Upcoming events:

June 10, The Art of Gathering: Community building, Getting to Know Your Neighbors

July 8, Home Exchanges and Workaway: How They Can Work for You, with Guest Presenters Edith Rohde and Jill Turner

August 12, Enrich Your Life Now, No Matter Your Age; yes, into your 80’s & 90’s and beyond

Our committee is busy planning future topics. We’ll send out announcements as they get finalized.

If you have suggestions for topics you’d like to explore in this group, please let me know.

Also, let me know if you no longer want to receive emails about this program.

With appreciation for this wonderful community,

Manzanita Talks with Councilors

Submitted By: mkuestner10@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I attended one of the informal talks with Manzanita City Councilors at the Manzanita Visitors
Center recently. Through May, they’re focusing on Revenue Diversification, specifically asking about the possibility of having a Prepared Food/Beverage Tax in Manzanita.
Our discussion ranged far and wide (though focused on potential pros and cons of a local
Prepared Food/Beverage Tax).
The point of the discussion is that in Manzanita, the city depends heavily for revenue on the
Transient Lodging Tax (generated by hotels and short term rentals (STRs).
Our reliance on these taxes is driven by a very low property tax rate, (Manzanita property
owners pay (rounded) .42 per $1,000 of assessed value. Compare this with Bay City, where
property owners pay (rounded) $2.50 per $1,000. Of assessed value)
So, what other options do we have to pay our bills and assure a livable city?
Cannon Beach, Ashland and Yachats all have a Prepared Food Tax of 5%.
Ashland has had theirs for 30 years, followed by Yachats and most recently by Cannon Beach.
The “beverage” (if included) excludes alcohol.
There are a few more Conversations with City Councilors scheduled. I encourage
friends/neighbors to attend, to comment, discuss and learn from one another.
The remaining discussions scheduled at the Manzanita Visitors Center are:
May 14 (Tuesday), 1-3pm
May 22 (Wednesday), 1-3pm
May 28 (Tuesday), 10-12noon
To be sure there’s room at the Visitors Center, they ask us to reserve our seats:
