Art Class for Kids!

Submitted By: tigrereeva@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hello North Coast Community!
I am offering another series of Art Classes for the Winter-Spring term. Classes start Monday, January 22nd and Wednesday January 24th and will be held at the NCRD Kitchen Room from 4-5:30.
Mondays are 5-8 yr olds and Wednesdays are 9 and up. These age requirements are flexible and a bit of an experiment to see if there is interest in different age groups in our community. If one day works better than the other for your child please reach out and let me know and we can make it work!

For this series we will focus on fundamental skills in drawing, painting, and sculpture. Each week we will begin with drawing exercises to develop the building blocks of visual perception and organization. We will then progress into multimedia projects where the students will develop their own creative voice and freedom.

To receive more information and to register and reserve your child’s spot please email Reeva Wortel tigrereeva@gmail.com
or call/text (503) 816-1724

A bio about my background as an artist and a teacher:
Reeva Wortel is a contemporary artist, social worker, and teaching artist. Through portraiture, immersive installations, dance-theater, and multi-year community based art projects and murals, she has spent over 20 years exploring the depths of human complexity by utilizing her art, teaching, and social work to re-imagine the communities we live in toward a more just and equitable world.
In her experience as an arts educator Reeva Wortel has witnessed how the arts promote positive development in the academic, social, and emotional realms for all students. Wortel believes that when children engage in art projects they’re taught to tap into their innovative side, to think creatively, and out of the box and that this process inspires children, supporting them in all aspects of their lives.

Auditions for The Rise and Fall of Little Voice
by Jim Cartwright
February 5th & 6th at 6:30pm

The Ten Fifteen Theater
1015 Commercial St – Astoria, OR
www.thetenfifteentheater.com/auditions

Director Edward James is looking for three male actors and three female actors ages 20-70 for the second show of Ten Fifteen’s 2024 season.

Bring your calendars and a list of all conflicts between February 11th and April 13th. Headshots and resumes are welcome, but not required.

Performances will run for three weekends between March 29th and April 13th, 2024.

If you wish to audition, but are unable to make the scheduled dates, please email the director at ejames1@charter.net to make an appointment.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors auditioning for the role of LV should be prepared to sing short impressions of two or more of these singers: Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Gracie Fields, Dusty Springfield, Lulu. These may be performed A Capella or accompanied by music from smartphone.

The Cast:
LV (Little Voice): reclusive young woman who has a gift for vocal impressions
Mari: her man-hungry, overbearing mother
Sadie: Mari’s somewhat slow, admiring neighbor
Ray Say: ambitious talent promoter, ladies man
Boo: comic club owner (doubles as main phone installer)
Billy: shy phone installer, crushing on LV

About the Show: Little Voice is a sometimes grim, often hilarious fairy tale set in an English town in the eighties. It’s the story of a soft-spoken young woman who, after her father’s death, spends most of her time in her room listening to his collection of old records of famous female singers. Sometimes, she sings along. One night, dear lascivious mum drags home Ray Say, a talent promoter. He overhears LV singing faultless imitations of divas upstairs and sees a meal ticket. After considerable struggle, he manages to lure LV to a nightclub where shy LV sings, but only when the lights are out. More struggle and more singing ensue. Subplots play out. And in the end, LV finds her own glorious voice.

The fusion of Ecstatic Dance and Contemplative Dance Practice creates a space to hold each one of us as we are. It is rigorous because awareness is moving between our inner and outer noticing and we are tracking the nowness of it all…Who knows what will happen?

Shooting Star by Steven Dietz

Submitted By: danyelle@thetenfifteentheater.com – Click to email about this post
Ten Fifteen to kickoff 2024 with a trip down memory lane.

Shooting Star explores the woulda-coulda-shouldas that come with examining one’s past relationships. This tender-hearted story of past love is perfect for fans of both traditional and nontraditional romance… just in time for Valentine’s Day! This production marks the first of the community theater’s new season and will play for three weekends in their Downtown Astoria space.

About the Show: Snowed in overnight at a middle-America airport, college lovers Elena Carson and Reed McAllister have an unexpected and life-altering reunion. Elena has stayed true to her hippie-ish, counter-culture path, while Reed has gone predictably corporate and conservative. As the night gives way to laughter, banter, remembrance and alcohol, Elena and Reed revisit a past that holds more surprises than they imagined—and a present that neither of them could have predicted. Filled with laughter and ache, Shooting Star is a bittersweet romantic comedy about the middle days of our lives, and how we got there.

Cast:
Elena Carson – Gigi Chadwick
Reed McAllister – John Darcy

Calling All Writers: ‘Beach Noir’ is Writers Read Theme

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
“It was a dark and stormy night….”
That may be one way to begin a story, but writers will undoubtedly find many other ways to start their submissions to the Cannon Beach Library’s Writers Read Celebration, with the theme, “Beach Noir.”
In its sixth year, Writers Read offers writers of all ages from everywhere the opportunity to write on a specific theme. All written formats will be considered (essay, story, poetry, haiku, script, etc.). The deadline for submissions is Feb. 2.
Noir fiction often takes place in a dark or foreboding setting, though the tone and descriptions can be unconventional and playful. Other elements may include flashes of humor, flawed underdog characters or a crime scene.
A panel of volunteers will select 10 to 12 works to be read by their authors during the celebration on March 22 in person at the library or via Zoom.
Authors are limited to three entries with a 600-word maximum per entry.
Submissions should be in Word format. Include a separate cover letter with the writer’s name, email and phone number. Please do not include the author’s name or contact information on the entry document so authors remain anonymous to the reading panel.
Email submissions to info@cannonbeachlibrary.org or mail them to P.O. Box 486 Cannon Beach, OR 97110. Email is preferred.
The NW Authors Series Committee sponsors monthly author presentations and other events at the Cannon Beach Library. A recording of last year’s Writers Read Celebration is available on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org/events-and-programs/recorded-presentations. It also appears on the library’s YouTube page.

It’s an open space to play, celebrate life and community, practice embodiment modalities, enjoy music, process emotions, connect with others, and ultimately be nourished by the experience on a physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual level. No dance experience necessary~

This week’s dance will be asking us to welcome balance as we settle into these quiet months.

*Flow toys are welcome!
*Bring a water bottle and layers.
*Bring kindness and respect for yourself and others and your willingness to explore and to dive into the ecstasy of spirit available through movement.
*No outside shoes on the dance floor if possible (dirty floors aren’t fun to roll around on)
*Please no strong scents, including most incense, we’ll keep it in the foyer.
*We ask that you limit talking during the dance set. Set up, break time, and the foyer area are great places to have longer conversations to limit distractions for others.
*We are encouraging everyone to be mindful of each other’s safety and health and stay home if you are not feeling well, or have been exposed to someone sick. Follow your own judgment on whether to wear a mask or not.

We dance every Thursday eve and second Sunday mornings…Hope to dance with you soon.
