Join Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS during a FREE course for emerging landscape and nature
photographers.
Composition is how we arrange visual elements to communicate our ideas about the subject and
to engage the viewer. In this class, we will explore the basics of photography composition, most
of which are applicable to drawing and painting as well. We will give examples illustrating
standard “rules of thumb”, including the first rule: “There are no rules”! This event includes the
main workshop providing tips on landscape photography and composition plus an optional field
excursion.
Netarts Bay WEBS is pleased to have Michael Krall as the presenter for this workshop. Michael
is an avid amateur photographer and birder and has been photographing seriously for over 50
years, he has taught prior photography courses as well. His works were recently featured at the
Hoffman Gallery in Manzanita. Some of Michael’s photographs can be viewed, among other
places, on the www.tillamookbirder website, which he webmasters. Currently, Michael is a
retired family physician who divides his time between Netarts and Portland.

Some guesses here: they add weight, size, bulk; they flowered a few months back; their leaves are turning color; they feed wildlife; they distract from the neighbor’s house.
All those are important. Absolutely! But if you study your favorite specimens, whether maple, dogwood, Hinoki cypress, pine, whatever, you might also start seeing inherent, powerful shapes hiding among the branches and leaves.
And once you can discern those shapes, you might then use a few sharp tools and a whole lot of know-how to release the muscular, sinewy sculptures hiding in your garden.
Are you game? ‘Cause that’s where we’re going!
Join us this Saturday, 9am-3pm, for a day-long immersion into the ART OF ADVANCED PRUNING with the Wonder Garden’s favorite pruning instructor, Maryann Lewis.
Here’s what to expect:
We’ll spend the morning at a stunning Manzanita garden with choice trees and shrubs that have grown out of scale. Through give and take with Maryann, we’ll learn step-by-step how to ‘see’ the potential shape of certain plants and strategize pruning cuts to reveal their forms.
In the afternoon we’ll be unleashed into the Wonder Garden (under supervision!) and will work in teams on selected overgrown trees to restore their scale, enhance their shape, and bump up the Wonder in the WG.
Class space is limited to provide individual attention!

On April 13th, 2023 the Lower Nehalem Watershed Council will be hosting their regular board meeting and a presentation w/ Brilyn Brecka, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife North Coast Beaver Conservation Biologist.
The LNWC’s Board Meeting will start at 5 pm. The board meeting will include regular council business including reports on fiscal status, organizational health projects, and a discussion of ongoing and upcoming LNWC projects. The public is welcome to join us and learn more about how the Watershed Council operates and what we do.
Brilyn Brecka’s presentation will begin at 7 pm. Tune in to this presentation by Brilyn Brecka, a beaver biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, to learn how intertwined the lives of beavers and salmon are. For thousands of years, beavers and salmon have co-evolved, creating a relationship between the two species that generate several important benefits to salmon restoration and recovery in coastal systems. Consequently, restoration projects that focus on creating and maintaining beaver and beaver-modified habitats can have a trickle-down effect on salmon populations, not to mention other benefits to both humans and the environment.
Brilyn Brecka is the Beaver Conservation Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in the North Coast. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, majoring in Wildlife Ecology and Management, and she integrates her passions for habitat restoration, ecosystem-based management, and wildlife into her everyday work with beavers in Oregon. In her free time, she enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and reading.
Both the Board Meeting and this presentation will be hosted on Zoom and are free to the public. The zoom link is us02web.zoom.us/j/82002702767 or on the Faceboook event at www.facebook.com/lnwc1. You can also contact the watershed council at info@nehalemwatershed.org. A recording of this presentation will also be posted on the LNWC’s YouTube channel with our other recorded presentations. Just search for “Lower Nehalem Watershed Council” on YouTube.
Event Information: This event is FREE and open to the public. Find more information on our speaker series and the links for access on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/lnwc1).

Cloud and Leaf will be here selling copies of his latest book, “Race for the Ruby Turtle,” a children’s chapter book that takes place on the Oregon Coast!
Book Description:
“Jake Rizzi is about to spend the summer at his great-aunt’s cabin in the mossy, sodden Oregon backwoods. His parents seem to need a break from him and his ADHD. He tries not to take it personally, but isn’t sure about his aunt’s off-the-grid lifestyle and strange stories about a turtle with a ruby-colored shell.
Soon, Jake learns that the turtle is more than a myth. And thanks to a viral article online, strangers from all over the world have arrived to search for it–including a sinister animal poacher and towering twin zoologists from Sweden. Jake is sure that finding the turtle will change how people see him and his “attention issues”–but he’ll need help. Setting off with his new friend Mia, Jake must decide what matters more–personal glory? Or protecting the wonders of nature?”
We hope to see you and your families there!
Celebrate International Day of the Girl on October 7th. Stop by the library from 12-4 p.m. to pick up a Rebel Girls packet. Have your Rebel Girl write a letter sharing their dreams for the future. If they all look pretty good to you, alas, you can skip this bbq post and move on to this wkend’s Blessing of the Animals or other wonderful local events.
BUT! If you’re certain which of the three below is the perfect cut – and you’re humble enough to know what you DON’T know about pruning small trees and big shrubs – consider this an invitation to join a dozen fellow gardeners as they sharpen their smarts in a day-long Advanced Pruning Workshop next Sat, 10/14.
