Climate Thriller Author Jon Raymond at Cannon Beach Library

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Jon Raymond, an Oregon Book Award-winning author and Emmy-nominated screenwriter, will be the first speaker for the Cannon Beach Library’s 2023-24 NW Authors Series.
His presentation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16 in the library or online. This is a hybrid event; attend the talk at the library or watch online: www.cannonbeachlibrary.org.
Raymond’s recent book, “Denial,” a futuristic thriller about climate change, was a New York Time’s Book Review Editor’s Choice in 2022. The book, nominated for an Oregon Book Award, will be available for purchase at the event.
A Newsweek review calls Denial “enthralling.”
“The not-so-distant future of ‘Denial’ questions much of what we think we know about life and death and the consequences of our decisions…This subtle and morally engaging novel is a simple yet thought-provoking read,” the Newsweek review adds.
Fellow Portland author Omar El Akkad says “Denial” is a “subtle exploration of what justice means on the other side of human-driven climate calamity.”
“There are no easy answers in this novel, only a deeply humane look at the chasm between crime and punishment, cause and consequence,” El Akkad says.
Raymond also is known for his novels “The Half-Life” and “Rain Dragon.”
In 2008, Raymond published his first collection of short stories, “Livability,” which won the Oregon Book Award’s Ken Kesey Award for Fiction in 2009.
Two stories from that collection (“Old Joy” and “Train Choir”) were adapted into feature films directed by Kelly Reichardt. Raymond was nominated for an Emmy for his teleplay writing with Todd Haynes on the HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce,” starring Kate Winslet.
His latest collaboration with Kelly Reichardt is “Showing Up,” which premiered at Festival de Cannes in 2022.
Raymond’s writing also has appeared in several publications. He lives in Portland with his partner, writer Emily Chenoweth, and their kids, Eliza and Josephine.
The Cannon Beach Library’s NW Authors Series committee hosts authors from September through May. Local writers also are invited to participate in the Writers Read event in March.

Let’s talk

Submitted By: codger817@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Tired of angry, divisive politics? Let’s try this, getting together for civil conversations about the things that matter to us. I’m looking for “lean reds”, “lean blues” and “in-betweens”. Let’s get together on Zoom and see where we end up. My hope is that we’ll have a better understanding of each other. This week let’s talk about our hopes and fears about the future. Ground rules are very simple. (1.) Everybody brings their best manners. (2.) Nobody talks for more than 4 minutes at a stretch. (3.) Nobody comes to win an argument or change anybody’s mind. (4.) Listening is more important than talking. Zoom meetings Friday’s at 9 AM, invite link below us06web.zoom.us/j/81863487074?pwd=v1VrpdHv8Q42BH51gb1P0tYPPz6fbL.1

FREE CONCERT: The Hackles and Michael Hurley, Sunday Sept 17 in Cannon Beach

Submitted By: tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Two of Astoria’s best—The Hackles and Michael Hurley—visit Cannon Beach for a free concert in the park on Sunday, September 17th.

Join us for an evening of sweet strumming and stirring harmonies, as The Hackles and Michael Hurley make a rare visit to Cannon Beach.

The Hackles–Luke Ydstie (guitar), Kati Claborn (banjo) of Blind Pilot, along with Halli Anderson (fiddle)—deliver “Highly refined songwriting and awe-inspiring harmonization,” according to Rough Trade. The group’s latest record, “What A Beautiful Thing I Have Made,” was released this spring.

The album is “is achingly raw and breathtakingly alive,” exclaimed Atwood Magazine. “The Oregon group’s radiant, resonant music provides a captivating backdrop for life’s deeper questions and considerations, compelling us to step back out of our everyday and once again dive deep into ourselves, our worlds, and the things that make our lives worth living.”

Joining the bill is Astoria’s Michael Hurley, who the New York Times dubbed “an original folk iconoclast.”

“This reluctance to work by anyone else’s code epitomizes the recalcitrant idealism of Hurley, one of American folk music’s longest-running survivors and visionaries,” wrote the Times. “For six decades, Hurley has chronicled his passions, problems and curious predilections on several dozen albums, often self-made or self-released. His dependable strangeness and self-reliance cast him as a spiritual forebear and elder ally for songwriters at the country and folk fringes of indie rock,” inspiring luminaries such as Cat Power, Yo La Tengo and Will Oldham.

Hurley will be accompanied by members of The Hackles.

This free, family friendly concert begins at 5:00PM. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, low-backed chairs and fully stocked picnic baskets.

The park is located in downtown Cannon Beach, northeast of the Chamber of Commerce at 2nd & Spruce.

The concert is produced by the Tolovana Arts Colony and made possible by a Community Grant from the City of Cannon Beach.

For more information, visit tolovanaartscolony.org, email tolovanaartscolony@gmail.com, or call 541-215-4445.
