The longest day of the year is approaching fast and we are having a retreat day to celebrate.

This Saturday, June 17th from 9am-2pm

The flower gardens are exploding. The river is clear and low. It’s finally warm enough to do a retreat day outside.

I’m firing up our wood fired sauna/cold plunge and making tea & snacks.

**Plus you will very likely get a bonus serenade by my new hand pan drum that I’m currently obsessed with:)

Razor Clamming Workshop w/ Razor Clam Chowder at Osprey Cafe

Submitted By: shiftingtidesnw@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
This workshop will introduce students to intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides, ocean conditions, and safety. We will be digging Razor Clams on the beach front in Seaside, OR. Students will learn about the different environments of various clam species as well as the clamming industry along the Oregon Coast.

After clamming we will venture to Osprey Cafe where owner and avid forager, Josh Bokish will make us his locally famous smoked razor clam chowder. Josh opened Osprey Café in 2014 after working in kitchens all over Portland. The café focuses on brunch favorites, with an international flair and a specialty in local produce and seafood. Foraged goods often appear on the menu; including mushrooms, sea beans, stinging nettles, seaweed, fiddlehead ferns and wild onions, to name a few. Josh is also an avid fisherman, crabber, barnacle gatherer and clam digger in his spare time.

Extra bonus, chowder will be served in bowls made by a local potter Michelle Valigura of Basalt Pottery in Cannon Beach. Michelle has created her own blend of recycled and foraged clay that is sourced from the cliffs of the north coast. She incorporates this mixture of clay into bowls and plates for daily use or an artistic showpiece. You’ll even get to take these home with you (:

Shellfish licenses must be purchased prior to class, which can be done online through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

WHEELER: THANK YOU FOR A GREAT CLEAN-UP DAY!

Submitted By: ml2@comcast.net – Click to email about this post
Yesterday’s 15th annual Wheeler Clean-up Day was a grand success if you measure success by filled-to-the brim-30-cubic-yard dumpsters! Our community gave the event everything they had and no longer wanted or needed! Thank you for turning out to make this a grand day!

A huge “Thank You” to Sight-Unseen Shredding, Heart of Cartm’, Pacific Roots Coffee + Mini Donuts (3 cheers for warm, fresh donuts!), Recology, Averill Recycling, and Tillamook County Solid Waste and Recycling Administration!

Our volunteers were amazing and are probably putting their feet up today! Applause goes to Mike, Jan, Brad, Cindy, Andrew, Donna, Steve, Ron, Phil, and Gordon! Thank you so much, you made the day fun and the work go smoothly!

As always, we learned a lot, made adjustments as we went along, and came away happy. The weather was grand, too, and that was a nice gift!

With gratitude,

Join us outside in the St Catherine’s gardens for Church of the Wild:
Sunday, June 25th and July 2 at 4pm:
(more dates to come)

In this meditative gathering, our liturgy will be simple and focus on the presence of the wild life around us. Instead of a sermon, we will take time to listen as the natural world speaks in its own ways, with optional time to share our experiences. Wear comfortable clothing. Bring along a journal, if you like to write or sketch your reflections.
A simple, alternative form of Holy Communion will be offered at the close, to all who would like to participate in this ancient, elemental sacrament.

Orchestra concerts this weekend!

The North Oregon Coast Symphony completes its 2022-2023 season with two classical music concerts in June. This non-profit ensemble, under the direction of conductor Cory Pederson, brings together musicians from the north Oregon and south Washington coast. In addition to selections from Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suites (Nos. 1 and 2) and an original composition by orchestra member James Achilles, the concerts will feature several NOCS musicians as soloists.  Accompanied by the orchestra, Laurie Swanson, oboe, will play a haunting piece entitled The Winter’s Passed; Achilles will sing the famous “Figaro” aria from  Rossini’s Barber of Seville; and Jewell High School student Brayden Payne will be featured in Mozart’s clarinet concerto.

The orchestra will perform the concerts on Saturday, June 10, at St. Catherine Episcopal Church (36335 N. Hwy. 101, Nehalem, OR) beginning at 7 pm, and Sunday, June 11, at the Bob Chisholm Community Center (1225 Avenue A, Seaside, OR) beginning at 3 pm.

Admission for the concerts will be $10 adults, $5 students, and children 12 and under (accompanied by an adult) free. Tickets will be sold at the door for both concerts (cash or personal check only.)

Be Unreasonable, take a drive

Submitted By: Constance@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
Yes it’s a 2 hour drive. Yes, it would be crazy to do and WOW do you really want to be reasonable? Read the synopsis then get your ticket (s), love to see you at one of the gardens!

villageatthefalls.helpfulvillage.com/pictures/798/download

The garden tour is being hosted by the Village at the Falls and supports a ‘sister’ village to our own Rainy Day Village (Who you going to call’?). This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, don’t miss it !

2023 GARDEN & ART TOUR, synopsis of the gardens

1. This garden features lots of color and trees in a rural area which looks natural with rolling grassy areas, walkways, and many shrubs, as well as various eating areas and water features. If you would like to bring a picnic, a few tables set up, and their daughter will have snacks out to share. – is also an artist and her garden art and mosaics will be for sale, as will those crafted by other local artists. The Oregon City Garden Club will have some plants for sale.

2. This small farm features a barn (with artists inside), a permaculture vegetable garden, and many flowers and trees as well as a beautiful fruit tree in the front which will have tables and chairs for picnickers. Their daughter is a caterer and will be selling charcuterie cups (think meat, cheeses & veggies in a paper cone cup).

3.For pure fantasy you can’t beat B’s garden! Can you even imagine walking through a garden of Bowling Ball Trees, fairy houses, and even a Sasquatch family? This garden is complete with three water features, hostas and ferns, all on one acre. There will be plenty of artists here, too.

4. – – and her partner own one of the historic homes in older Oregon City. From the curbside the entire neighborhood admires her brightly flowered front entrance area, as well as the Heritage Sycamore Tree which dominates the front yard. The back yard has a great arbor and many plantings and shrubs, but what catches your eye are the two CATIOS that they have placed there for their cats to enjoy the back yard with them!

5. In the front stands a huge 120+ year old cedar tree which is lighted day and night now. As you proceed to the back you will see the makings of a basic English garden with with many perennials combined with colorful annuals. A large pergola and interesting fence will give you some ideas on how to take a small area and make it into a great backyard outdoor space to share with neighbors and friends.

6. As we talked with – – about his home being on the Garden Tour we kept looking next door and seeing a brand new garden emerging from bare ground. It was so fascinating to see new plantings every week that we thought there may be people looking for new ideas on how to just “start” their garden and get it looking very nice in less than a year. Be sure to talk with A and R to get some ideas on what might work for you, and maybe even what NOT to do. There will be hot dogs and chips for sale at this garden, as well as artists and crafters doing their thing.

7. At this house you can’t help but think you have walked into a secret rain forest with all of the huge ferns growing right out of sheer basalt rock. R and her husband spent 33 years turning a beautiful but inhospitable pile of boulders into the most beautiful garden imaginable. Artist Ben Dye contributed sculptures and a wonderful fence made of recycled steel. Artist Jean Chapin’s ceramic art populates the garden, and Kate Simmons’ metal mesh piece, “The Ripped Bodice” grace the the back of the house. Mirena Oberg and her whimsical ceramics will be the featured artist at this location, along with Tanith Yates. Parking is limited, so please see shuttle information below.

8. S’s garden overlooks Willamette Falls and is a miracle to behold! She and her husband carved over 30 different garden rooms out of the sides of the cliff that was previously her back yard, carrying dirt and rocks by wheelbarrows up steep paths themselves over the years. Each garden room is uniquely different and this is a garden to see once in your lifetime. Much of the area has steep pathways, so probably not a good choice for those who are physically impaired, although there is much to see in the flatter area near the house. Parking for this garden is limited, so shuttles are provided from the parking lot on the corner of Center and S 2nd Avenue, the old location of the Oregon City Public Works Offices.
