Writers to Celebrate the Rising Tide in Stories, Poems at Library Event

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
A rising tide lifts all boats, but for 13 writers who will participate in the Writers Read Celebration at the Cannon Beach Library on March 7, a rising tide is the theme flowing through their stories and poems.

From shipwrecks to wrack lines, the pieces to be read by Oregon, Washington and Canadian writers explore the meanings and metaphors of “rising tide,” this year’s theme for the library’s annual writing project.

The seventh annual Writers Read Celebration will begin at 7 p.m.; admission is free. People can attend in person at the library, 131 Hemlock St., or online; the link will be on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.

Fifteen pieces to be read include stories, poems and haikus. Topics include a woman who lifts a whale off the beach, flowers floating from Ukraine, a body to be buried, a morning and evening spent at Haystack Rock and a nod to political currents.

This is the seventh year that the library’s NW Authors Series Committee asked writers from everywhere to submit works on a specific theme. Writers could submit up to three entries in any format limited to 600 words per entry.

Of the 85 entries, the committee, after a blind reading, selected 15 pieces to be read by 13 writers. One of those writers is from Alberta, Canada.

Those invited to read this year were:
John Ciminello, Naselle, WA, poem: King Tides at Cape Disappointment
Deanna Duplechain, Seaside, OR, short story: Seeing Saturday
Christie Ellis, Astoria, flash fiction: All at Sea
Kristi Lund, Nehalem, OR, poem: Heeding the Tide
Mimi Maduro, Cape Meares, OR, haiku, Three Haiku
Colleen Medlock, Portland/Seaside, OR, flash fictions: Shifting Tides and A Light in a Storm
Russell Myers, Vancouver, WA, flash fiction: The Body
Jennifer Nightingale, Astoria, OR, poems: She Knows the Tide is Rising and Gifts from the Wrack Line
Grace Page, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, poem: An Evening Walk to Haystack
Robert Michael Pyle, Gray’s River, WA, poem: All Boats Rise
Florence Sage, Astoria, OR, poem: But Never Mind
Phyllis Thompson, Manzanita, OR, poem: The Tides
Evan Morgan Williams, Portland, OR, flash fiction: The Great Black Shape

ORCHESTRA PRESENTS FAMILY CONCERTS

The North Oregon Coast Symphony continues its 2024-2025 season with two concerts in March titled “Melodic Journeys.” Designed to please audience
members of all ages, the performances will feature Greg Smith’s The Melodic Life. This piece traces the life story of a “lighthearted melody named Bob,”
illustrating events like going to school, playing sports, and other developmental experiences.
The underlying message that “variety is the
spice of life” will be demonstrated through a wide range of musical themes.
The narrator will be Deac Guidi, a local professional opera singer who has performed with NOCS and throughout the northwest region.
Another feature in the program will be Robert Smith’s Symphony No. 2, “The Odyssey.” Inspired by the ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic tale, this work takes the audience on a dazzling musical voyage. Morton Gould’s rousing American Salute will round out this concert series.
The first concert will take place on Saturday, March 15, at the Nehalem Elementary School Gym (36300 8th St., Nehalem, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.
The second concert will be on Sunday, March 16, at the Bob Chisholm Community Center (1225 Avenue A, Seaside, OR) beginning at 3:00 pm.
Admission for both concerts will be $10. Ages 18 and under are FREE (children 12 and under with adult supervision).
Tickets will be available at the door only for both concerts. Cookies and refreshments will be available at intermission.

NW Authors Series Presents Rachel King

‘Bratwurst Haven’ Author Rachel King to Speak at CB Library

The interrelated lives of low-wage sausage factory workers is at the heart of a short story collection written by Rachel King, who will speak at the Cannon Beach Library at 2 p.m. Feb. 22. Patrons can attend the presentation in person or join the talk from home via a link on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org.
King’s book, “Bratwurst Haven,” was a finalist for the 2024 Oregon Book Award for Fiction. Set in a small town in Colorado a decade after the Great Recession, “Bratwurst Haven” is a collection of twelve interrelated stories about the employees of the St. Anthony Sausage factory. King explores the struggles of the low-wage workers in the factory—a laid-off railway engineer, an exiled computer whiz, an older man with cancer but no health insurance—as they help and comfort one another in America’s postindustrial economy.
King is an author and editor whose works also include two poetry chapbooks, the novel “People Along the Sand,” which centers on the passing of the 1967 Oregon Beach Bill, and various other published short stories.
Inspired by her relatives’ and her own experiences, King often writes fiction that explores exile, land use issues, mental health, and workers’ rights. Her works have received praise for involving diverse, complex and authentic characters. King currently assists in the labor and communication departments at a nurses’ union. She lives in Portland.

Great Backyard Bird Count 2/14-2/17/25

Submitted By: cthompson@lewisandclarknpa.org – Click to email about this post
Lewis and Clark National Historical Park invites everyone to participate in the 28th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) February 14 through 17, 2025. In this worldwide citizen science opportunity, anyone can count wild birds anywhere on one or more days and enter their sightings at birdcount.org. The information gathered by tens of thousands of individuals helps track bird population changes on a massive scale. The GBBC is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, Birds Canada, and Wild Birds Unlimited.
From Friday, February 14, through Monday, February 17, visitors to Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, can join in the count by recording bird observations in the park and make plans to count birds in their own backyards.
Participating is easy, fun to do alone or with others, and can be done anywhere you find birds.
Step 1: Decide where you will watch birds.
Step 2: Watch birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days, February 14–17, 2025.
Step 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear within your planned time/location and use the best tool for sharing your bird sightings:
• If you are a beginning bird admirer and new to bird identification, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to tell us what birds you are seeing or hearing.
• If you have participated in the count before and want to record numbers of birds, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website (desktop/laptop).
Along with the actual bird count, the park will be sharing other bird-related activities. A “Great Pink Heron Scavenger Hunt” will be on-going using the Netul Trail along the Lewis and Clark River. A “Birds of Fort Clatsop” display may be viewed in the visitor center. A variety of bird field guides and bird-themed items are available for purchase at the Fort Clatsop Bookstore operated by the Lewis & Clark National Park Association, the park’s non-profit education partner.
Visitor Center hours are 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, with trails and Fort replica open from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is $10 per adult and free for youth 15 years old and under. America the Beautiful passes and Oregon Pacific Coast Passports are accepted for free admission.
Check birdcount.org for more information on the worldwide bird count event or to submit bird counts. The weekend’s birding events at Fort Clatsop are sponsored by the Lewis & Clark National Park Association and the National Park Service. For more information, call the park at (503) 861-4414 or check out www.nps.gov/lewi or lewisandclarknps on Instagram, or Lewis and Clark National Historical Park on Facebook.
