United Paws rescued a young Mama & her 6 kittens after their family moved away in early May and left them behind. Two caring women brought them to UP headquarters where Volunteer Fosters have been caring for them until they are placed in forever homes. We named the Mama cat “Nyx” (pronounced “nix”) because she has a sleek, satiny, black coat with a white locket and she moves with a natural grace & elegance. In ancient Greek mythology, Nyx was the goddess of the night & dreams, and often presented herself as a black cat. The name seems to fit our gorgeous Nyx!

Nyx is not quite a year old, friendly, and a fast learner. When you pick her up, she purrs and loves to have her neck and head rubbed. She is well socialized and comfortable in her foster home. Nyx is active and wants to play often, chasing the elusive red dot or going after small foam balls thrown across the room. With her mellow & playful personality, we think she would get along with a friendly cat or dog, and probably children who have gentle hands.

Nyx eats both wet food and some crunchies, and uses the cat box with no problem. She has been spayed, vaccinated, and is healthy with no special needs, except to have a loving family of her own who will appreciate her beauty & companionship. I do get tired of our local conspiracist (Andy) and his addiction to silly pseudo science and seeing his distorted views in print. Re his latest rant against wearing masks, he has little sensitivity toward others who use them for a variety of reasons other than “fear” instilled by “big pharma”. Gene Dierkin politely explained the many other reasons and was slammed in return. Immunocompromised with cancer, I appreciate Gene’s support. As for the King of Conspiracy, what a silly and trivial thing to obsess over. It’s sad to see someone so caught up in hate and vitriol, who is so quick to direct it toward others in our community. (Btw, didn’t he vow to stop posting his rants on bbq just a few months ago??)

One more thing to get off my chest while I’m at it: The dangers of the so-called ‘liberal’ anti-science ‘science is real’ crowd.

The ones who are STILL wearing masks (the leftist/communist equivalent to MAGA hats) to combat aerosolized ’covid’ are definitely in this anti-science crowd. And do you see the danger? Those masks are not protecting you folks, so if you don’t want to inhale ‘covid’ you need to just stay home or away from people. And it’s really sad when I see crazy people like this alone in their cars, alone on the beach, along gardening like the lady along Hwy 101 yesterday wearing masks, very much alone and outside. HELPERS WANTED-Does anybody out there have a couple of hours to spend volunteering for Friends of North County Recreation District sell patriotic banners, hats, float decorations, necklaces, and such with a 4th of July theme? No fireworks will be sold. Friends of NCRD support programs and projects through promotion, fundraising, and providing scholarships to encourage inclusion for all. This includes the Youth, Aquatic, and Fitness Programs. We have a few holes in our schedule we need to fill. The schedule is for two-hour shifts starting on June 28, a Friday, and goes until July 4, a Thursday.
On Friday, June 28 we need two people for both the 11-1 shift and the 3-5 shift.
On Saturday, June 29 we need one person for the 1-3 shift and two people for the 3-5 shift.
On Sunday, June 30, we need one person for the 9-11 shift, two people for the 1-3 shift, and two people for the 3-5 shift.

I was very proud to serve as a board member of Tillamook County Transit District (TCTD), until I wasn’t. I was convinced the District had at its heart a deep concern for the people of Tillamook County. Sadly, I think I was wrong.
Now I think the District and Board’s main concern is maintaining a favorable public image, whether it is deserved or not.
In April of 2023, the Sunset Empire Transit District (SETD)(Clatsop county) ran out of money and had to cease operations for more than a month. It has now returned to operations but at a reduced level of services.
In April of 2023, Tillamook County Transportation District (TCTD) operated 7 days a week with 245 scheduled routes and 16,176 monthly Dial-a-Ride patrons. By May 12, 2024, it deteriorated to a 6 days a week for in-county service, with 147 scheduled routes and 7,366 monthly Dial-a-Ride Patrons.
I believe the problem for both districts is a fundamental structural problem of District governance. The board consists of 7 well-intentioned citizens who are elected by the public. The board leaves day-to-day operations to the management. The board hires the General Manager and approves budgets. The General Manager runs the operation and I suppose if things get bad enough the board can fire the General Manager. Otherwise, there is a definite hands-off attitude by the boards.
I believe the basic problem is that the board bases its actions on what Management chooses to tell them. For both SETD and TCTD, this has led to nasty surprises for the board. What is worse, the public loses out on services they are dependent on.
People in Clatsop County lost the services they depended on for a few weeks. People in Tillamook County have lost their Sunday in-county services and each of their numbered routes has been cut back.
In Clatsop County, management withheld the true state of finances until they ran out of money. In Tillamook County, management has never told the board how many drivers and dispatchers are still on the payroll.
The public is the one who gets the shock of the bus that isn’t there anymore.
I believe Clatsop County has corrected its financial reporting. I believe it’s time Tillamook started being honest every month about how many employees it has.

A long Manzanita City Council meeting last night–lots got done.
It was announced that we will have a referendum to vote on in November–citizen Kugler filed the necessary paperwork so we will vote on if we want monthly billing of our water bills… It’s unclear why? The City moved to monthly billing last year.
The silver lining is that the mandated Water Study this forces Manzanita to pay for will not be the $20,000. originally estimated. Since Manzanita conducted a Water Study only last year, our intrepid City Manager, Leila Aman was able to get a discount–so it’ll cost “just” $8,500. Lots of lawyer fees too (hourly rate in the high $400’s). It’s also not clear how much it would cost the City to re-implement quarterly billing.
It’s timely to remind us all that if we have questions and or concerns about the city, asking our City Councilors questions directly can save us all a lot of time and money.

Friends of North County Recreation District (NCRD) want you to know we will be selling flowers in downtown Manzanita, next to the Deli, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. These flowers come from local gardens and are sure to brighten your day or your neighbor’s day. Bouquets will be prices at $10, $15, and a few $20. Money raised will support programs at North County Recreation District. Friends Mission Statement: to support NCRD programs and projects through promotion, fundraising, and providing scholarships to encourage inclusion for all. I want to acknowledge the willingness of the Manzanita City Council to revisit its recent increases to water rates and its meter reading and billing process.

Increasing rates and incorporating an annual rate increase to account for inflationary costs was long overdue and I believe supported by the majority of Manzanita citizens. However, the reduction in the base water allotment from 4,000 to 2,000 gallons per month created an unnecessary financial hardship for families and customers of more modest means by ensuring an additional monthly surcharge each and every month the 2,000 gallon base allotment was exceeded.

The City will return to quarterly meter readings and billing until the outcome of the referendum vote by the Manzanita electorate on keeping our existing quarterly meter reading and billing process takes place later this year. In the meantime, the City plans to hire another consultant to conduct a new rate study based on a quarterly rate structure which citizens will be able review and comment on before it is adopted.

Those in our community who are having to deal with higher rent, groceries, gas etc. do not need to have the city again increase the base water charge. The best outcome of this new study is to maintain the existing base charge and also provide households with the necessary amount of water in the base allotment that is free of additional surcharges.

Hello Tri- Villagers!
We are paying tribute to the service of our 60+ year old dining TABLES, utilized by members of our
community, and beyond, by retiring them.
Yes, these old warriors have participated in birthday parties, weddings, family reunions, meetings,
dances, and other countless events over the years. Families and friends have also gathered together
for celebrations of life, for many beloved residents of our Nehalem Valley, and beyond, in this pioneer
Hall.
But now we feel the time has arrived to usher in a new era of culinary experience at our Grange Hall. As the old adage goes “They have paid for themselves many times over.”
We, at the Grange, have chosen to send out an appeal to all the people, who over the years, have
enjoyed sitting at our 60+ year old friends, to assist us in procuring new dining apparatus, by generously coming together to replace the old(er) with new 8’ TABLES.
New, modern (and easier to move and set up) TABLES set us back around $200 each. To go together (halvsies?) with a friend, or local business to purchase one would be VERY helpful! Heck, we could even inscribe, with a Sharpie, your initials on the underside so your generosity will live on in Grange infamy!!
Also, they would very effectively complement our new more comfortable chairs recently purchased, by the Grange, for the enjoyment of community members participating in gatherings. Thank you, Grange member Constance, for locating, transporting these new chairs, and also the community support!
Seriously, the old stallions are showing their age – aren’t we all? They are heavy, cumbersome to move, and literally falling apart. Time to put ‘em out to pasture so to speak!

Several days ago I was walking around my neighborhood. I live in a rural area, outside the boundaries of the local towns, and the air was especially wonderful and slightly fragrant. I stopped to take deep breaths to just “drink” in the air. It was really a specially wonderful day. I asked myself “How did I come to live in such a wonderful place?
A big plus or bonus added to this beauty, is the fact that we have many small farms here that grow both meat and food . What I prize very highly is good clean food, grown without being sprayed or traveling long distances on trucks. Corporate food is handled by many, placed on conveyor belts, washed and sprayed mechanically, and placed in plastic bags, etc.
We are so lucky to be able to access farm fresh food!
I have a large garden and grow what ever I can, But we have farmers markets in this area and if you can’t or are not into growing food, it is still available through the farmers markets that sell locally grown food including meat. Without walking very far I can come to a farm that produces grass fed beef, the cattle live in a beautiful place, not crammed together in a food lot, but living like cattle would like to live, in a beautiful valley with lush grass pastures, a nice barn for shelter, and killed humanely and instantly with a shot to the head, and processed locally. And further up the road is a farm that is producing eggs through regenerative farming methods. This is a “new” way of farming that is extraordinarily kind to mother earth. A better world is waiting to be born !
We all eat! I am writing this because, like what you have seen in the news about farmers in other countries, our farmers are being put out of business. This video explains how “OUR” farmers are being put out of business. Please WATCH and PLEASE support our local farmers.

A Message from State Senator Daniel Bonham:
New state water agency appointee to be considered by the state Senate.
Governor Kotek recently announced that Ivan Gall, a 25-year veteran water resources regulator was appointed to lead the Oregon Water Resources Department. This appointment will be considered by the State Senate at the end of the month.
Simply put, Gall is an inexperienced leader who will likely perpetuate the status quo of a paralyzed inefficient agency that routinely misses its own performance measures and fails to meet its core mission of managing our state’s water.
As a representative of a robust farming district and as someone who is very invested in our state’s natural resources – this is a very important appointment that I am tracking. The OWRD makes policy decisions that can affect the state’s natural resource resilience for decades to come.
Status quo has not been working for quite some time. During Mr. Gall’s time with the OWRD, we have observed a series of troubling issues that prove he is not qualified for this job promotion. Issues range from pulling permits from landowners, wasting $550 million in funds, staff caught with alcohol and weed in state vehicles, numerous wells running dry due to resource misallocation and more. From a personnel, policy and programming standpoint, he has proven himself incapable of creating collaborative solutions. Failure should not be met with a raise.
The Oregon Farm Bureau has continuously expressed concerns over this appointment and I share those concerns. Farmers and the agriculture industry are the original environmentalists. They care for the land like their lives depend on it – because their livelihoods do. The ag industry knows the circle of life and how to take care of our natural resources – they are the experts who work in the field – literally – day in and day out.
I also joined the bureau in their opposition by writing a letter to Governor Kotek to reconsider her appointment of this failed bureaucrat and will be calling on our colleagues to reject his appointment. 
Our state’s water resource agency needs a leader who understands the complexities of water management, the ability to navigate policy challenges, the vision to change the culture from within the department, and the commitment to enhance the welfare of all Oregonians through our natural resources. 
I hope you will join me in calling on our leaders to reject this appointment.
