Thank You, BBQ and BBQ Readers!

Posting on behalf of loretta.kim.rosenberg@gmail.com

Years ago, a little girl I took care of after the death of her mom said something that changed how I think about hard times and bad trouble.

If the bad thing hadn’t happened, then all the good things that came after wouldn’t have either. Because it’s all connected. The bad stuff you live through and the good stuff, too.

Would you be the same person if the tragedies hadn’t happened?

If I look at my life through the rearview, I can see that I’m here now because of a series of not so wonderful events. There’s no teasing them apart.

If I hadn’t met Ben, I wouldn’t have the life I have now.

If my ex hadn’t hit me all the time, I wouldn’t have left him and met Ben.

If I hadn’t run away when I was 14, I wouldn’t have lived the life I did—the good and bad, the sweet and sour. It’s not one or the other—it’s always both.

The past we live through is all compost and poop, but without that there are no flowers.

Today I’m writing to say a big thank you to BBQ for being a forum that allows people to say their piece AND get rid of old couches, advertise local events, and sell those dishes you never really liked.

Posting on BBQ and hearing from so many people in the villages about what I’ve written has been a gift—whether you’ve liked what I’ve written or not. Some of you have been in both camps at different times. To everyone who has reached out to encourage, discourage, agree or disagree with me, I want to say thank you.

It’s been years since I published, but today a short essay I wrote is out in the world and I believe it’s because of BBQ. Posting taught me how to write again.

Yes, it gets a little hot and squirrely sometimes, but Chuck and Barbara have created a space to share our experiences, beliefs and opinions plus get rid of that old futon.

Here’s my essay!

Vitreography 101 with Mark Mahaffey at Hoffman Center for the Arts

Vitreography 101: Watercolor Monotypes with Mark Mahaffey
August 10 & 11 | 10:00am-5:00pm

What is vitreography? Vitreography is a fine art printmaking technique that uses a float glass matrix instead of the traditional matrices of metal, wood or stone. This class is open to all experience levels!

Get your creative juices flowing in this hands-on introduction to the world of vitreography printmaking. This two-day workshop will focus on substrates, paper, use of matrices, materials, and watercolor monotype to create monoprints. As the workshop progresses, students will gain an understanding of the process of making a print from a glass substrate with all of its possibilities.

Instructor Mark Mahaffey will lead a discussion regarding different materials and how to create a surface to draw on using watercolor, watercolor pencils, and watercolor crayons. By the end of this workshop students will be comfortable using an etching press, including its setup, materials, and problem solving. Those who come with an open mind will learn a new process that can be built upon to make great art. Each participant will take home several prints of their creation.

Antique glass canning jars with original tin lids.

Submitted By: Artwithmisskaren@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Slowly unpacking and trying to fit all my stuff in my greatly “downsized” house. It’s clear I still have too much.
I have way too many of these awesome old canning jars that I’ve collected over the years. I use them for dry goods like rice, oatmeal, pasta noodles, cereal, sugar, nuts & so forth. They look way better in the cabinets and on the shelves than plastic or cardboard boxes.
They all have working lids. If you’re ever shopped for these you know they don’t come cheap. I’ve paid 9$-15$ in general. If I could get 1/2 that amount for each. Say 5$ ea. I’d be grateful and use it towards a utility bill. The picture shows 4 of the round jars and one square. I have a second square one that says coffee on it.
I also have a few other curiosity glass bottles as you see pictured on split bottom of picture. The one with embossing of antique quack medicine will be much more because of rarity.
Reach out if this is your thing, or you want to make it your thing. They are in north end of cannon beach on your way to ecola state park.

In Search of a Rental Between Manzanita and Rockaway

Submitted By: jubileesiusfoster@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Hey everyone! Me, my fiancé and our one year old son are looking for a one to two bedroom house between Manzanita and Rockaway. We have a super well behaved 4 year old cat as well so it has to be pet friendly. I work in Manzanita and he works in Wheeler and the drive from Tillamook to our jobs multiple times a day is starting to take a toll on our car. We both grew up in Nehalem and we wanted our son to be able to as well. Our budget is around $1500 a month. I know how bad the housing crisis is at the moment especially with the prices of everything going up but I’m keeping my hopes up that we can find something soon!

Manzanita legal bills – two sides to the story

Submitted By: bill.brayman@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
Several people have complained that an outspoken Manzanita citizen has cost the city a lot of money for legal fees. One person stated that the legal bills amounted to 15 thousand dollars.

“We can now put a beginning price to one citizen’s ego. It’s unfortunate that we as Manzanita residents have to pay the price …”

But what they don’t explain is the reason for challenging the city. The reason is that the outspoken person is questioning the city’s water billing and budgeting practices. He wants the city to lower residential water bills. He is on the side of the Manzanita water customer.

One issue the citizen raises is the contention that the city gains a couple hundred thousand dollars from the water system fund. Another issue the citizen has raised is that the city changed to monthly water billing in order to increase revenue from residential water bills.

So, even though the city may have to pay 15 thousand in legal bills, the flip side of that argument is that the city may stand to gain 20 times that, perhaps nearly a quarter million dollars from the water fund, at the cost of residents having to pay more on their water bills.

We Manzanita water customers may not have all the facts. But a case can be made that the city can do better about lowering our water bills. So, it is not clear at all that the issue is “one citizen’s ego”. And promoting such a one-sided argument does a disservice to Manzanita water customers.

Manzanita city seems to be run pretty well, even excellent perhaps. But there are always ways to improve things. That should be our goal.
