United Paws’ Kittens of the Week: Grant and River

Submitted By: unitedpawshelp@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Grant is a male, domestic short hair, who sports a distinctive golden-and-brown bullseye coat. Shy at first, Grant now comes running for attention when humans enter his orbit. He loves wrestling with his rescue buddy, River, and hasn’t met a toy he doesn’t like! Grant loves to compete with River for his foster’s love and attention. He even rolls over on his back so she can stroke his beautiful golden belly!
River is a handsome boy with silver-gray stripes and entrancing bluish eyes that look like deep pools of celadon. When he wants to spend time with you, he’ll put his feet on your chest while moving in for kisses. River is interested in exploring new places and playing with other kittens and cats. He gets very excited when he learns about a new toy that grabs his attention, especially when his buddy Grant is interested in the same toy. These two kittens are buddies; they peacefully sleep together and play together. They would make a great pair to adopt but will also do fine individually.
A kind-hearted lady in a trailer park where Grant and River were born, was feeding about ten abandoned kittens and cats. Eventually, she realized she needed help and the cats needed medical attention and to be spayed / neutered to curb anymore litters. She reached out to United Paws and volunteers caught four of the kittens, including Grant and River. The four kittens have all been cared for, spayed / neutered, and are wonderfully socialized. Now, Grant and River are ready for loving forever homes.
Read more on United Paws’ website about kittens and cats available for adoption. Visit www.unitedpaws.wordpress.org for more adoption info and an adoption application. You can also email United Paws at unitedpawsapps@gmail.com. Or Call United Paws at 503-842-5663.

Autumn Winds

October 31, 2023

Under this waning moon

in a season of descending,

everything is cradled, held

in silence. As the east winds

gather, offering a presence,

rising over coastal mountains

then descending to the ocean,

they can open a heart to hope,

a hope that abides imagining,

imagining a space where no one

is excluded, all are welcome,

and the intimacy is generous.

In this genesis

of what has been denied

joy is recognized without a name.

Do you have noises in the attic, odors in the crawlspace?
It is officially rodent season.

As the cold wet season arrives rodents are looking for warm dry places to hole up for the winter.

Fun fact: Norway rats usually construct nests in below-ground burrows or at ground level. Crawl spaces and attics offer the ideal climate for nests, Nests may be lined with shredded paper, cloth, or other fibrous material. Litters of 6 to 12 young are born 21 to 23 days after conception. Newborn rats are naked and their eyes are closed, but they grow rapidly.
A single female Norway rat may birth up to 15,000 ospring in a single year.

Grants Available to Build Rental Housing in Tillamook County

Submitted By: mkuestner10@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The Tillamook County Housing Commission has opened applications for its third round of funding to aid development of multifamily rental housing in Tillamook County. Proposed projects must be to build new multifamily rental housing of three units or more and may be located anywhere in the county, including cities and unincorporated areas. To support the immediate needs in the county, funding is prioritized for affordable and workforce housing options.
The online application is available on the Tillamook County Housing Commission webpage: Applications will be accepted through December 31, 2024.
Any individual, private company, builder, developer, public agency, local government, or nonprofit organization may apply. Both new projects and projects already in planning stages are eligible to apply. Funds may be requested for any associated cost of the proposed project including infrastructure, system development charges, cost overruns, materials, labor, and permits.
The maximum amount the grant will fund is $20,000 per unit in a project. There is a total of $400,000 to award in this funding cycle.
To maintain fair standards for assessment, applications will be evaluated by the Housing Commissioners using a criteria-based point system, weighted to ensure that small and large projects are given equal chance to receive funds.
Applicants must submit a pro forma, the financial document that demonstrates their need for additional financing for the proposed project. Applicants will also make a short presentation of their project to the Housing Commissioners at its December meeting. Final award decisions will be made by the Board of County Commissioners.
The Housing Production Solutions Fund was developed by the Finance Committee of the Tillamook County Housing Commission. The fund is supported by fees Tillamook County collects for Short Term Rental (STR) operator licenses in unincorporated areas. The fund is part of the Commission’s larger strategy to find collaborative and achievable solutions to the countywide housing shortage.
For more information and answers to questions about the Fund, please contact Housing Coordinator: Parker Sammons, at Parker.Sammons@TillamookCounty.gov or, visit the Housing Commission website, tillamookcounty.gov/bc-hc.

mainstream media promotes disinformation

Submitted By: dwieb1@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In the middle of the night I was listening to BBC radio when they reported that Biden apparently called Trump supporters “garbage.” It took a few minutes, but I realized Joe Biden would never intend to say anything of the sort, and it must be disinformation. In the morning I found the quote and quickly understood opportunistic people were intentionally spinning his words to mean something very different from what Biden intended.

I expect that from Republicans who decided to put party over country, but mainstream media is either willfully ignorant or guilty of contributing to the dissemination of false information. Are they that desperate for what amounts to click bait? Do they have no common sense? Did they just follow the lead of other media outlets without bothering to do a few minutes of investigation? What happened to fact checking? And why do they have a double standard when reporting on the 2 parties? Inquiring minds want to know :p

Fascist rhetoric

Submitted By: dwieb1@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
The word fascist is triggering because of its association to Hitler and all he did. However Benito Mussolini is known as the founder of fascism, and whatever one thinks about Trump doesn’t mean he isn’t following that play book.

I heard an excellent interview with Jennifer Mercieca, an American scholar of rhetoric and professor of communication at Texas A&M University, last night on Australia’s ABC News Daily. It is only 15 minutes long:

www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/abc-news-daily/what-makes-trump-a-fascist/104533134

She explains in detail the method behind Trump’s “madness.” Suddenly everything Trump says in his rambling rally speeches makes perfect sense, and I understand why so many good, and probably rational, people love and support him.

Trying to figure this out has been a long journey for me and probably many others. Meanwhile apparently this is not a new revelation, since Mercieca wrote a book, released in 2020, explaining his rhetoric:

https://www.amazon.com/Demagogue-President-Rhetorical-Genius-Donald-ebook/dp/B08B3LCS3X

Considering all the grief this issue has caused over the last four years, why mainstream media has failed to mention this important analysis will be a subject covered in future history books. The Harris campaign must long ago have understood what’s going on and I trust there is a good reason they haven’t brought it up themselves. It’s only because Trump’s former cabinet members are just now sounding the alarm, and Harris was directly asked by a reporter, that it’s getting any attention at all.

I hope this helps anyone who has likewise struggled. It sure helped me, and I’ll no longer have to self-medicate with alcohol out of frustration from not knowing what’s happening. I know now.

Letter from an American
Heather Cox Richardson

Republican presidential nominee former president Donald Trump offered Americans his closing argument in the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, October 27, at Madison Square Garden. At a rally that evoked a Nazi rally at the old Madison Square Garden on February 20, 1939, Trump’s warm-up acts set the terms of Trump’s final pitch to voters by calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean” and railing against “f*cking illegals.” They called Vice President Kamala Harris “the Antichrist” and “the devil,” and called former secretary of state Hillary Clinton “a sick son of a b*tch.” When Trump took the stage about two hours late, he echoed the warm-up acts, and then reiterated that he believes fellow Americans are “the enemy within.”
The racism and fascism Trump’s MAGA Republicans displayed at Madison Square Garden is usually expressed within their media bubble, where it passes for normal conversation. The backlash against it among people in the real world appears to have shocked the Trump campaign so much that the candidate is running away from his own closing argument.
On Monday, Trump felt obliged to tell an audience in Georgia, “I’m not a Nazi.” The Trump campaign has made it a point never to apologize and never to explain, but on Monday it broke that rule, trying to distance itself from performer Tony Hinchcliffe’s comments about Puerto Rico.
This morning, Trump announced he would hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago. He showed up more than an hour late for the assembled press, then began the event by undermining faith in the election, claiming the campaign is going “very well; there are some bad spots in Pennsylvania where some serious things have been caught or are in the process of being caught,” although it was unclear what he meant.
He went on to deliver such a litany of lies that CNN cited them as a reason to cut away from the speech. Trump chose not to acknowledge the offensiveness of the Madison Square Garden event, saying ““The love in that room, it was breathtaking—and you could have filled it many many times with the people that were unable to get in.”
Tonight, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris offered her own closing argument to the American voters. Once again taking her campaign directly to Trump, she held a rally at the Ellipse near the White House, where Trump spoke to his supporters on January 6, 2021, before sending them off to the U.S. Capitol to stop the counting of the electoral votes that would make Joe Biden president.
More than 75,000 attendees in the Ellipse and standing on the Mall near the Washington Monument waved flags and held up signs with “USA” printed on them as Harris spoke in front of a backdrop of the White House, on a stage with a line of American flags.
“One week from today, you will have the chance to make a decision that directly impacts your life, the life of your family, and the future of this country we love,” she said. “[I]t will probably be the most important vote you ever cast. And this election is more just than a choice between two parties and two different candidates. It is a choice about whether we have a country rooted in freedom for every American or ruled by chaos and division.”
Harris outlined Trump’s attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and noted that he is “unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed with grievance, and out for unchecked power.” She continued: “Donald Trump has spent a decade trying to keep the American people divided and afraid of each other. That is who he is. But America, I am here tonight to say: that is not who we are.” She called for Americans “to turn the page on the drama and the conflict, the fear and division.”
The vice president described herself as “someone who has spent most of my career outside of Washington, D.C.,” a former prosecutor who cares that all people are treated fairly and that those who “use their wealth or power to take advantage of other people” are held to account.
She promised to “work every day to build consensus and reach compromise to get things done…. [to] work with everyone—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents—to help Americans who are working hard and still struggling to get ahead.” She vowed to lower costs by delivering tax cuts to working people and the middle class, ban price gouging on groceries, lower the cost of prescription drugs, provide down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, and build millions of new homes.
She promised to fight for a child tax credit and to lower the cost of child care, as well as allowing Medicare to cover the cost of home aides for seniors.
She promised to “fight to restore what Donald Trump and his hand-selected Supreme Court Justices took away from the women of America.” “[W]hen Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide,” she said, “as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.”
She promised to “work with Democrats and Republicans to sign into law the border security bill that Donald Trump killed.” She promised to “remove those who arrive here unlawfully, prosecute the cartels, and give border patrol the support they so desperately need. At the same time,” she said, “we must acknowledge we are a nation of immigrants.” She vowed to “work with Congress to pass immigration reform, including an earned path to citizenship for hardworking immigrants like farmworkers and our Dreamers.”
“As Commander in Chief,” she said, “I will make sure America has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world.… I will strengthen—not surrender—America’s global leadership,” and stand with America’s allies because “our alliances keep American people safe and make America stronger and more secure.”
While Trump offers “more chaos, more division, and policies that help those at the very top and hurt everyone else,” Harris said, “I offer a different path. And I ask for your vote. And here is my pledge to you: I pledge to seek common ground and commonsense solutions to make your life better…. I pledge to listen: To experts, to those who will be impacted by the decisions I make, and to people who disagree with me…. I pledge…to approach my work with the joy and optimism that comes from making a difference in people’s lives. And I pledge to be a president for all Americans. And to always put country above party and self.”
“I love our country with all my heart,” she said, “And I believe in its promise. Because I’ve lived it…. And I see the promise of America in all of you…. I see it in the young people who are voting for the first time who are determined to live free from gun violence and to protect our planet, and to shape the world they inherit.
“I see it in the women who refuse to accept a future without reproductive freedom, and the men who support them. I see it in Republicans who have never voted for a Democrat before but have put the Constitution of the United States over party. I’ve seen it in Americans, different in many respects, but united in our pursuit of freedom, our belief in fairness and decency, and our faith in a better future.”
“Nearly 250 years ago, America was born when we wrested freedom from a petty tyrant. Across the generations, Americans have preserved that freedom, expanded it, and in so doing, proved to the world that a government of, by, and for the people is strong and can endure. And those who came before us—the patriots at Normandy and Selma, Seneca Falls and Stonewall, on farmlands and factory floors—they did not struggle, sacrifice, and lay down their lives only to see us cede our fundamental freedoms…only to see us submit to the will of another petty tyrant.
“These United States of America: we are not a vessel for the schemes of wannabe dictators. The United States of America is the greatest idea humanity ever devised: a nation big enough to encompass all our dreams, strong enough to withstand any fracture or fissure between us, and fearless enough to imagine a future of possibilities.
YES, INDEED, NOBLE WORDS THESE BE: AN IDEA, A CONCEPT, A HOPE, HOWEVER HIT AND MISS IT HAS BEEN MADE INTO REALITY, HOWEVER MUCH MONEY INTERESTS HAVE SOUGHT WITH PARTIAL SUCCESS TO CORRUPT IT.
“So, America, let us reach for that future. Let us fight for this beautiful country we love. And in seven days, we have the power—each of you has the power—to turn the page and start writing the next chapter in the most extraordinary story ever told.
“I thank you all,” she said. “God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.”
In Las Vegas, Nevada, today, the Harris campaign placed a giant political advertisement on the Sphere, the music and entertainment venue owned by the same family that owns Madison Square Garden. The globe showed stars and stripes, pictures of Vice President Harris, the words “Harris-Walz,” “November 5,” “Vote for Freedom,” “Vote for Opportunity, “Vote for our Future,” “Vote for Kamala,” “Vote for a New Way Forward.” “Vote for Reproductive Freedom,” “When We Fight, We Win,” and “When We Vote, We Win.”

PLEASE VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS AND TIM WALZ FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT IN OUR NATIONAL ELECTION.

PLEASE VOTE FOR ANDY DAVIS FOR OREGON HOUSE REPRESENTATIVE FROM OUR DISTRICT—ANOTHER VOTE FOR DEMOCRACY RATHER THAN BIG MONEY INTERESTS.

I post things about Oregon to get a better Oregon

1. A fundamental building block of Democracy is voting. Do you agree?

2. When counting the votes in a Democratic country, if the count is not secure, then Democracy is not secure either.

3. I am sure we all want our votes to count.

4. Our voting is under threat today – but that means you really must cast a vote because the more votes that are cast, the harder it is to cheat. That is what they say.

5. I am called a threat to Democracy by Lucy Brook because I am informing citizens about what is happening to our voting process so we can make sure it is fixed. I asked her what mis-information I am spreading and I haven’t heard back yet. But I am going to keep asking !

6. Yes, Oregon is being sued because they are not following federal guidelines about voting, and our voting roles are said to be the worst in the country.

7. And that is the truth so please vote.
