Giving Locally

Lots of ways to Give and Share this Holiday Season-let’s just get right into it!

Meals for Seniors, Inc., PO Box 852, Rockaway Beach, Oregon 97136. This organization was established about 22 years ago and has worked hard to address the food insecurity needs in our community among the elderly. In 2024 Meals for Seniors, Inc. prepared 13,852 meals of which 5,662 were enjoyed by seniors coming into their dining hall at the Catholic Church in Rockaway Beach. 8,190 of these meals were delivered to home bound seniors living between Nehalem and Garibaldi. This year they are on track to prepare over 18,200 meals! These are remarkable numbers! Food costs continue to grow exponentially, and more seniors face overall financial uncertainty. Ensuring seniors have enough to eat has always been their priority. This organization also has a Family Fund you might consider. This is a separate project with its own funds yet is housed under their non-profit status. This fund assists families in need who might otherwise “fall through the cracks”. In December they work with the Tillamook County CARE and Neah-Kah-Nie School District who identify families in need. They provide clothing, toys, gift cards and food for the holidays. Last year they assisted 34 families with a total of 82 children; we also help with utility bills throughout the year. This past summer, through their Family Fund they developed a Summer Lunch Program. Six volunteers and their drivers made and delivered 2,405 lunches when school was out for the summer. They will continue this program during the upcoming school holiday schedule. Please write Family Fund in the byline when making a donation to this great project. This program is managed and operated by volunteers and 100% of your donation goes directly to services. Please consider donations to both Meals for Seniors, Inc. and the Family Fund. This organization is a huge support to our communities. Note: Some information provided by Meals for Seniors, Inc.

Neah-Kah-Nie School District Family Resource Center, PO Box 28, Rockaway Beach, Oregon 97136 Information provided by Neah-Kah-Nie School District Family Resource Center. This organization run by the Neah-Kah-Nie School District, among other things, provides 190 students in our District with backpacks with food for the weekends and also school holidays. To see what all they do please go to their website: nknsd.org/nehalem-elementary-school/family-resource-center/
The FRC (Family Resource Center) is where students and families receive support in many forms. Many students access it as a clothing bank for new/used clothing. Swim suits, towels, warm jackets, shoes and other clothing items are checked out or given away nearly every day. The FRC also acts as a hygiene & grooming station, a temporary dental sealant area and a place to conduct individual and school-wide head checks. Students and their families may request assistance at any time. The FRC will do its best to accommodate those with small, urgent or confidential needs.
Not as visible is the partnering with community and county agencies to help families who are in need of emergency assistance. Each week the FRC helps to facilitate the backpack program by helping the amazing volunteers with the storage and distribution of weekly food assistance.
Nearly all the faces of NES make it into the FRC eventually. For some it’s a place to play games with friends as a reward for good behavior. For many it’s a classroom for extended support before and after school. Everyone is treated with kindness. Everyone is welcome. For more information, please call Jenn Hopkins at 503-355-2222. Again, this is a very essential and special organization at our schools today.

Nehalem Bay Community Services, PO Box 232, Nehalem, Oregon 97131. This local organization provides many services in our community. Again, connecting with them at their web site will fill in lots of details-https://www.nehalembaycs.org/. This organization has a Food Pantry and Clothing Bank along with Pet food, open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. Wednesday they are open from 1 PM to 5 PM. Senior lunches are served and delivered on Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 11:30 AM, offering both nutrition and companionship. They also fix lunches for kids when school is out during the summer. Please consider dropping off food donations, clothing, pet food, and/or a cash donation to this organization. At this time of year, the Nehalem Bay Community Services also makes sure, through their CHILD Program many in our community have Christmas presents for their children. This CHILD Program is also very active with providing clothing and school supplies for kids before they go back to school in the fall.

Rockaway Beach Lions, PO Box 611, Rockaway Beach, Oregon 97136. As the holidays approach, the Rockaway Beach Lions step in to deliver food baskets to families and seniors. A holiday dinner is provided and presents for children are purchased. A great program that has been around for years. Your support is appreciated.

What can you do? What will you do?

If you are able, I’d like to get bold here and ask you to sit down and write a check or put some money in an envelope and get it to one or more of these organizations as fast as you can. Show these organizations how much we appreciate all the work they do to make sure our community is fed and clothed. Our Seniors, Adults, and Children are all special, and your support is needed. A huge thank you to all the volunteers!

Thanks,
Patty

Call for submissions: Writers Read Theme is ‘From a Distance’

Submitted By: nmccarthy1276@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
Writers will have an opportunity to gain a new perspective when they enter their work in the Cannon Beach Library’s Writers Read Celebration.
This year, writers will explore and interpret the theme, “From a Distance.”
Some say perspective changes everything. What happens when you can only see something – or someone – from afar? Maybe it’s a planet glimpsed through a telescope, a loved one seen through memories, or a truth that only makes sense once you’ve stepped back.
In its eighth year, Writers Read offers writers of all ages from everywhere the opportunity to
write on a specific theme. All written formats will be considered (essay, story, science fiction,
poetry, haiku, etc.). The deadline for submissions is Feb. 2.
A panel of volunteers will select 10 to 12 works to be read by their authors during the Writers
Read Celebration on March 6 in person at the library or via Zoom.
Writers are asked to follow these guidelines:
• Authors are limited to three entries with a 600-word maximum per entry.
• Submissions should be in Word format.
• Include a separate cover letter with the writer’s name, email and phone number. Please do not include the author’s name or contact information on the entry document so authors remain anonymous to the reading panel.
• Email submissions to info@cannonbeachlibrary.org
The NW Authors Series Committee organizes Writers Read, as well as monthly author presentations and other events at the Cannon Beach Library. A recording of last year’s Writers Read Celebration is available on the library’s website, cannonbeachlibrary.org/events-and-programs/recorded-presentations. It also appears on the library’s YouTube page.

The Manzanita City Council Administrative Failure on Classic Street

Submitted By: rkinor@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
In May, the City received the low bid of $3.5 million dollars for the reconstruction of Classic Street with all of the features recommended by the City’s consultants including a retaining wall along the west side of the street. The City Manager had estimated  construction at $3.1 million and consequently rejected the bid due to the cost.

The Council, which claims to have not been involved in the decision to reject the bid, could have easily increased the project budget with General Fund Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) funds. The additional $400,000 would have amounted to approximately 3 months of TLT revenue. $3.7 million dollars of unappropriated General Fund revenue comprised of TLT collections was available and citizens would have undoubtedly supported this additional investment in the project. Why wasn’t this option brought before the Council and citizens for discussion before the City Manager rejected the bid proposal?

City officials tell us that visitor TLT revenue pays for City infrastructure yet once again by refusing to consider the use of any General Fund TLT funds for this project, proves that this statement is empty rhetoric and demonstrates the inability of City officials to understand how to effectively administer their own Budget to fund infrastructure construction.

Consequences of rejecting  the low construction bid in May:
Spending approximately $475,000 in engineering design and consulting fees and then ignoring the recommendations.

The section of Classic Street that will be most heavily used by pedestrians has unnecessarily been compromised by placing those pedestrians between an 8 foot high retaining wall on the east side of the pedestrian path and direct contact with narrowed vehicle travel lanes on the other side.

Splitting the project into two separate time frames resulting in additional cost and street closure time.

Legal expenses to date in excess of $111,000. The majority of these costs were associated with work connected to the rejected bid. Approximately $50,000 of those costs have been spent on the second bid of the project and attorney costs to defend charges of irregular bidding practices by the City Manager during the rebid process.

Loss of the retaining wall on the west side of Classic Street which was recommended to: a) arrest the movement of the street base that is currently contributing to the street failure and will now likely continue into the future. b) prevents the ability to construct the wider street section providing a safer 8 foot wide pedestrian/bike path, safer 11 foot vehicle travel lanes and the 2 foot wide landscape buffer to provide additional separation between vehicles and pedestrians.

What the Council did find funding for at their November meeting was hiring of yet another City Hall employee at a total cost of approximately $85,000 to $102,000 per year which will be substantially paid for with TLT revenue. We now have 8 City Hall employee positions and 5 Police officers but still can’t open City Hall on Fridays because the City Manager claims staff are too busy.

The Council seems to have no problem finding TLT dollars to hire more City Hall staff. It’s unfortunate that they lacked the same motivation to use available TLT funding to ensure the construction of a safer and structurally improved design for Classic Street. Randy Kugler

Art in the Manzanita Library for December

Submitted By: susantone@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
NTLF Art in the Library Series features the art of Glenna Gray in the Manzanita Library for the month of December. Glenna is an artist who works in felt.  As she describes it “Wool has tiny barbs which when needle or wet felted join together, making it possible to create in 2 or 3 dimensions. Thus felt is sculptural, soft, warm, and lends itself to infinite possibilities.”  Glenna’s creations are so fluid and innovative, they look like painted watercolors.  Glenna received a Cannon Beach Arts Associations 2024 arts grant, and teaches classes in needle felting.

This series is presented by North Tillamook Library Friends.

Animal Chaplain Services now available on the North Coast!

Submitted By: Christy@cosmichealingnw.com – Click to email about this post
Hello BBQ Community-

Rev. Christy Kay here….most of you probably know me in a multitude of ways – from my extensive community service work, from Rising Hearts Studio, from my services as an Energy Healing Practitioner and Spiritual Life Coach, or in the many other various ways that I am engaged in supporting my community. But, I have also added another facet to my work fairly recently, and am delighted to begin offering new services in a new role.
I am happy to announce my ordination as a multi-faith and multi-species animal chaplain who works to promote the health and wellness of ALL living beings on their spiritual path, providing healing comfort and care.

What is Animal Chaplaincy? Animal chaplains are an emerging field of chaplaincy that tends to the needs of all living beings and species. An animal chaplain provides spiritual and emotional care and support for both animals and their human companions, often focusing on bereavement rituals and promoting animal welfare. They also connect services to those that need them.

What I offer:
Spiritual Care: spiritual guidance and support to people experiencing grief or loss related to their pets or other animals.

Rituals and Ceremonies: leading ceremonies, rituals, or habituals, to honor the lives and deaths of animals, and offer support to the bereaved – this includes Blessings and Healings.

Resource Help: connection to any resources needed for the benefit of both animals and their companions.

Compassionate Listening: I offer a safe space for people to share their feelings and experiences related to their relationship with animals.

Healing: Energetic healing sessions for companion animals, farm animals, wild animals, and humans alike to help with emotional, spiritual and physical issues.

Monthly Animal Loss Grief Support Group: Safe space to find solace in shared experience, with support, understanding and practices for healing grief, and accepting loss. Currently meeting every second Thursday of the month, 5:30 PM, at Rising Hearts Studio.

My Credentials:
Wellness Practitioner of the Year 2024/25/26 – Oregon
Ordained Animal Chaplain
Member of American Association of Veterinary Chaplains
Certified Ayurvedic Animal Wellness Consultant
Certified Animal Reiki Master Practitioner
Certified Animal Crystal Healing Practitioner
Certified Animal Sound Healer Practitioner

Testimonials:
Christy helped me to navigate the end of life and transition of my beloved dog, Ruby. I was fully immersed in my grief, and she held a compassionate space for my tears. She also assisted me with logistics, by navigating the complexity of end of life care, and acting an intermediary between me and my veterinarian, to make sure the choices I made were in the highest good of both myself and my beloved. She offered palliative care to Ruby, in the form of energy work through reiki, and sound, and with ayurvedic medicine to ease the transition when the time finally came for her to cross the rainbow bridge. Christy created and facilitated a beautiful memorial ceremony that fully captured and honored Ruby and her place in my life. We also met some weeks later, and Christy was able to relieve some of my pain through her clearing work, and by channeling messages from Ruby that only she could have given. Truly an amazing opportunity, working with Christy, and I would not have made it through this experience without the loving care she offered. I highly recommend her animal chaplaincy services. – Jan Mohr

Christy has helped me tremendously on my healing journey. The reiki/sound healing is phenomenal. She also worked with my dog who was struggling with anxiety and after one session I saw vast improvements in my dog’s well-being. Highly recommend any healing work with Christy, she is awesome!!! – Valerie Mannix

I highly recommend Christy‘s healing treatments for animals. It was a huge help to my grieving dog who was exhibiting unpredictable behaviour. – Carolyn Greenwood

Kenmore Model 158 Sewing Maching

Submitted By: seagate45@icloud.com – Click to email about this post
Kenmore Model 158 sewing machine for sale.
Tremendous value for experienced and new sewers. This is a smooth, quiet, fast machine. It has been professionally serviced and recently oiled.
Extras: Complete set of 14 cams to make decorative stitches. (Since it is not computerized, you simply switch cams in 10 seconds for various stitches) Accompanying presser feet, additional throat plate, and more.
Extra bobbins and bobbin case
Extra belt
Carrying case included.
Available for pickup in Manzanita
Why a Kenmore 158 is a good first machine
A Kenmore model 158 is a excellent choice for a first sewing machine because they are durable, all-metal workhorses that can handle a wide variety of fabrics, especially heavy-duty ones. They are often simple to use, reliable, and easy to service, making them ideal for learning the basics without being overly complex.

* Durability: Made with all-metal parts, precision machined metal gearing, these machines are built to last. No plastic gears that can break over time or start to wear and affect the sewing precision of a machine.
* Made in Japan with precision parts and strict quality control.
* Power and Performance: They have powerful motors that allow them to sew through multiple layers of fabric, like denim, with strong, consistent stitches.
* Spare parts, like the motor drive belt, are readily available.
* Simplicity: While they can do many stitches with the help of cams, many models offer the essential straight and zigzag stitches for all your basic projects, making them easy to learn on.
* Repairability: Because they are older, all-metal machines, they are often easier for a home user to oil and service themselves, and parts are generally available online.
* Versatility: With the addition of different cams (depending on the model), you can create a wide range of decorative stitches, expanding your creative options.

Many YouTube videos are available about this heavy duty 158 sewing machine.

Price is $95.00
