Matthews Named Manzanita Citizen of the Year

Submitted By: dillond@nehalemtel.net – Click to email about this post
David Mathews was named Manzanita’s Citizen of the Year at the June 5 meeting of the city council.

Matthews moved to Manzanita in the early 1990s. He’s been a builder and a real estate broker. He and his wife Dellanne McGregor met at Short Sand Beach. Both surfers and outdoors people, they have been married for over 30 years.

Announcing the honor, Mayor Kathryn Stock said his strong concern for the environment kept Matthews “active and visible coordinating many annual clean-up efforts – particularly along our beach.”

In response to the honor, Matthews said of his wide public involvement, “There is no ‘them’ in a small community — just us,” he said. “I encourage everyone to get involved.”

Stock also cited Matthews’ nearly 20-year involvement with local-non-profit the Eugene Schmuck Foundation which sponsors the annual Manzanita Open golf tournament. “The foundation has raised over 1.8 million dollars to support local food banks, senior meal programs, student scholarships, and other worthy local causes,” she said.

Manzanita’s Citizen of the Year is selected annually by a committee of previous honorees and serves as Grand Marshal of the annual Fourth of July parade.

1st Security Bank of Washington Invests in Better North Coast Health and Senior Care

(Wheeler) – The Manzanita branch of 1st Security Bank of Washington earlier this year provided a $5,000 unrestricted contribution to the Nehalem Bay Health District to enhance the construction budget for the new Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy and the renovation budget for our region’s only skilled nursing facility.

The Health District board has expressed its great thanks to the staff at the Manzanita branch for their support for the Health District as well as for the Nehalem Valley Care Center.

And a very special thanks to Manzanita branch manager Jessie Davidson for championing the donation from 1st Security.

Unrestricted contributions like that made by 1st Security Bank are particularly valuable in that they allow greater flexibility in how the Health District utilizes general obligation bond funding approved by voters in May 2023. The bond dollars are designed to support construction of the new Nehalem Bay Health Center and Pharmacy, renovation of the Nehalem Valley Care Center and pre-development work related to the eventual creation of workforce housing.

Under Oregon law donations to the Health District, an Oregon special district, are tax deductible for the donor.

As we enter summer it feels good to lighten our spirits by releasing the weight of grief that many of us carry for ourselves and for the world.

This Sunday Grief Salon is a gentle introduction to working with the ”5 gates of Grief” discussed in Francis Weller’s book “The Wild Edge of Sorrow”.

After a cleansing sauna and cold plunge (optional) and light brunch we will sit in circle to work with the sacred emotion of grief.

Northern CA based grief facilitator and therapist Joshua Lowe will be leading us through the 5 Gates:

First Gate: Everything we love we will lose.
Personal loss of loved ones, relationships, careers, loss of health. Here we are initiated into the medicine of vulnerability.

Second Gate: The Places that have not known love.
Parts of us that have been shamed, not allowed, or harshly judged. Here we are initiated into the medicine of compassion.

Third Gate: The Sorrows of the World.
Climate change, poverty, war and the collective pain of humanity.
Here we are initiated into the medicine of entanglement.

Fourth Gate: What you expected and did not receive.
Things we don’t realize we’ve lost, because we weren’t born into a village with full joyous welcome of our gifts.
Here we are initiated into the medicine of belonging.

Fifth Gate: Ancestral Grief
Unacknowledged and untended sorrow of those who came before us.Here we are initiated into the medicine of wisdom.

This event is limited to 12 people. Register below

What Does A Grief Salon Look Like?

This gathering is about sharing what is true for you, whether it’s tears, anger, numbness or fear.

It‘s about authenticity and connection.

There’s no expectation that you express your grief in any specific way. It’s not designed to “fix or process” you.

We’re hear to listen and express gratitude and share your feelings and experience.

This isn’t a depressing event, it’s a joyful, life affirming one.

About the facilitator:

Joshua Lowe is a licensed therapist, public educator, musician, and nature-oriented rites of passage and grief ceremony guide.

www.joshualowetherapy.com

He brings 20+ years experience supporting others in transformational journeying and has supported teens and adults in various communities including high school, men’s groups, nature, prisons, and in the therapy office.

Joshua has been mentored in leading grief rituals by Therese Charvet and Laurence Cole who are carriers of the grief rituals taught by Sobonfu Some and Malidoma Some.

He brings a deep reverence for the power of grief ritual as a healing force and is humbled by the opportunity to support others in deepening their relationship to self and community through honoring and expressing grief and joy.

NTLF Thanks Book Sale Volunteers & Supporters

This year’s NTLF Memorial Day Book Sale in Manzanita was a huge success. Thanks to the many people who bought books and supported the library by shopping at the Pine Grove, Calvary Bible Church, and the Hoffman Center. With over 6,000 volumes and about 175 volunteers, the book sale generated over $8,000 in support of our local library branch.

It takes a community to make a book sale. Thank you!

The Library Book Sale is organized by the North Tillamook Library Friends. All proceeds go towards maintaining the library’s building and grounds, ensuring the facility can continue to serve Wheeler, Nehalem, Manzanita, our rural communities, and visitors to the area into the future.

Club Manzanita Okay, we get it

Submitted By: rkinor@gmail.com – Click to email about this post
I want to acknowledge the willingness of the Manzanita City Council to revisit its recent increases to water rates and its meter reading and billing process.

Increasing rates and incorporating an annual rate increase to account for inflationary costs was long overdue and I believe supported by the majority of Manzanita citizens. However, the reduction in the base water allotment from 4,000 to 2,000 gallons per month created an unnecessary financial hardship for families and customers of more modest means by ensuring an additional monthly surcharge each and every month the 2,000 gallon base allotment was exceeded.

The City will return to quarterly meter readings and billing until the outcome of the referendum vote by the Manzanita electorate on keeping our existing quarterly meter reading and billing process takes place later this year. In the meantime, the City plans to hire another consultant to conduct a new rate study based on a quarterly rate structure which citizens will be able review and comment on before it is adopted.

Those in our community who are having to deal with higher rent, groceries, gas etc. do not need to have the city again increase the base water charge. The best outcome of this new study is to maintain the existing base charge and also provide households with the necessary amount of water in the base allotment that is free of additional surcharges.

Citizens who wish to keep up with developments on this matter can send me their email address at rkinor@gmail.com and I will let you know how to both stay informed and participate as the City moves forward to resolve this issue.
